Two Rants, One Day

Jan 06, 2009 16:56

If you smoke, you probably don't want to read the following rant. Just so you know.

I know smoking is addictive. The nicotine in cigarettes is probably one of the most addictive substances on this earth. Because of that, I'm not going to bitch about people smoking. A lot of smokers start young and have a hell of a time quitting when they get ( Read more... )

Whenever I pass by a smoker or smokers in the city mall I tend to hold my breath (as inconspicuously as I can hehe) until I'm at least three metres away from the smoke cloud.

Years of learning about the health consequences of smoking (throughout secondary school) and on top of that the fact that I'm doing a degree which will likely lead to a job in the health promotion field have at the very least influenced my severe aversion to the smell and act of smoking.

On the other hand though with the phenomenon of doctors and health professionals who smoke - they know of the health implications of smoking but still do... this discussion forum I found was pretty interesting in explaining why this occurs.

I was always wondering about doctors who smoked, but I always blamed it on the nicotine addiction.

I'm allergic to smoking, so when I'm around smokers or somewhere where people are smoking, I try to hold my breath. Makes life a little easier. Little.

I can completely agree with you on this topic, however lets also remember all the non-smokers who just LOVE to gratitously sneer and make commentary about people who smoke even outside.

Until and unless smoking a cigarette becomes illegal, people who choose to smoke should not be treated like criminals.

*snorts* Yes, I love the non-smokers who do that. Congrats! You just made assholes out of yourselves! Bravo!

I agree that smokers are addicted, though why in the nine hells anyone in this day and age would be idiot enough to start is beyond me. I just wish they'd move far enough away from building entrances and such that I don't have to hold my breath when going in. I totally agree that they assuredly don't have a right to gloat because they've decided to show some courtesy to their fellow humans....That's duty, and common decency, not heroism.

I'm also allergic to the smoke, and for years I've been saying that I'm allergic to the stench of it that clings to a smoker's clothing...and been poo pooh'd by docs! Now maybe they won't try to tell me it's all in my head anymore!

Gods know I had plenty of opportunity to pick up the bad habit where I grew up...but having both parents (Finally) quit while in the hospital for their respective heart attacks was definitely a "Here's your sign." moment.

Same reason people are stupid enough to do most things: peer pressure is a bitch at any age, devastating when you're young and hormonal and most vulnerable. Most people start then, coincidentally around the time they think they're immortal and stuff like that won't kill them.

My mom was put in a hospital for a smoking-related heartattack. Three months later, she's smoking again. *twitches*
