Two Rants, One Day

Jan 06, 2009 16:56

If you smoke, you probably don't want to read the following rant. Just so you know.

I know smoking is addictive. The nicotine in cigarettes is probably one of the most addictive substances on this earth. Because of that, I'm not going to bitch about people smoking. A lot of smokers start young and have a hell of a time quitting when they get older. As a non-smoker, I have no right to bitch about that.

However, what I can snarl about is this: Congrats! You're courteous enough to smoke outside your residence (or maybe you're just not legally allowed to smoke there). Whatever. However, don't fucking brag about it, don't get snooty about it, and don't look down on people who choose to smoke in their homes. While it does make a difference, it doesn't make as big a difference as you think. The smoke still lingers on your clothes. If you're one of those brilliant people who refuses to smoke in a building but proceeds to smoke directly outside of it, guess what. People still have to walk through the smoke to get into the building.

So please don't get all high-and-mighty about your decision not to smoke in your home. The toxins still linger on your clothes, in your hair, on your hands, etc. Don't try to defend your habit by snapping that at least you don't smoke inside. I'm still going to sneeze and my eyes are still going to run (stupid allergies) when you come near me after chain-smoking, no matter where you smoked.

Note: this rant is not intended for people who are realistic about their habit/addiction and are aware of these details.
