Thoughts on the 6x07 preview clip and the shape of the season
So.
Sam has no soul. Thus he can't feel. Can't care.
Does Castiel have a soul? He's already said he can't care, he doesn't have the luxury.
Dean has railed against him for no longer being human. Castiel has said he has had to do regrettable things.
Is it possible that by the end of the season Castiel will want a human soul of his own? So he can feel again? Or that in some similar vein, Castiel who cares but isn't allowed to acknowledge it will parallel Sam who wants to care but can't?
Wouldn't that be a wonderful way for the season to progress? Probably a little too chick-flicky for SPN, but a girl can dream.
I'd very much like to see Sam and Castiel both journey toward humanity from separate poles. It'd be wonderful, too, if Dean had to hold together his humanity, fearing losing it.
On an unrelated note, I'm wondering if the opening credits' "shattered glass" theme is a clue that Sam's soul is in fact in pieces, if the alphas hold those pieces and that's why the monsters are acting weird. That's my working theory right now. If monsters have a piece of a human soul - the devil's vessel's soul - that would definitely upend their habits/abilities. (If Sam doesn't sleep because he has no soul, then obviously his physical body is affected by the lack of a soul too. What if, not having a soul, his body doesn't decay toward death? That would again put him in the same bag as Castiel, whose body can be injured but does not age. Thus my earlier point.)
EDIT: In response to the idea that Cas DOES have feelings, I don't disagree. But I submit to you that angels' feelings are different than humans' - perhaps because angels have Grace where humans have a soul. Because angels do have emotion indeed, but their vessels' bodies don't decay. So what if Cas had to choose between Grace and a human soul, which would absolve him of his responsibilities but would also make him subject to time's ravages? This would be scintillating to watch.
But then we'd need someone to run heaven in his stead.
