There's a Paul Simon song "Train in the Distance", in which some lyrics go as follows:
everybody loves the sound of a train in the distance
everybody thinks its true
I think its used as a metaphor for life approaching you. You wait and hope for those distant goals you have, but then once you're there, once you've reached that future, you're already looking away, already unhappy with it, already looking towards another distant train.
I do like the sound of trains in the distance, the rolling, rhythmic chunking promising good things to come.
I don't think all life has to be that way. There's something to be said for the train in the distance, as it approaches you, and the sound it makes, the anticipation of it, to be sure. There's also something to be said for hearing the train from the inside, being in the train, traveling with it. Traveling with the events and scenery of your life. I like the sound of the train from inside: the rhythmic rolling chug is strongest, but muted, because you're inside. You can appreciate the moving train for what it is, and still look forward to your destination.
I dunno, a train went by. This is what I thought. Its been a long day.
Goodnight, everybody.
