Yesterday I get an email from a woman at CDI Corp., a technical consulting/contracting comnany.
After playing phone tag this morning, the woman thinks she can get me a test job right back here at IBM in Poughkeepsie.
It would be an hourly position, for one year, and no benefits, but it would be $38/hr !!!
That is a LOT more than what I am making now. Sure, I'm not getting the benefits, like paid vacation, but even if I took three weeks off, I'd STILL be making more. And if I bought my own health insurance for say $5000/year (not sure what it would cost), I'd STILL be making more money. And when you factor in all the overtime an exempt employee is expected to work, I come out even MORE ahead.
Now I don't have the gig yet. And I am still waiting on some other internal jobs within IBM. But I'm thinking more and more that contracting is the way to go. I'm more in control of my destiny. I can switch jobs easier as opposed to getting stuck in a rut or a niche.
I'm leaving soon for the
SetFocus Career night/seminar in Joyzee. If I could get this contracting gig mentioned earlier, I could do the SetFocus evening program (39 weeks) if they finally accept me. I have to have a technical interview, and I'm done with te application process. I could also work on my Java certification.
IBM medical finally decided that diabetes would have no impact on my ability to do my job. My doctor implied otherwise. Go figure. Moral of the story... do not get an illness whilst working for IB, or you WILL be out the door. They forced my prior manager out after he had his heart attack. Others have confided in me how illness has been used against them. at least IBM is loosing the pension lawsuit filed against them. They deserve it.
The wEDnsday night dinner group discussion became a bitch fest aboot IBM's new pay/performance plan starting this year. Morale sinks lower every year.
