i. Guys, you know me. You know I have totally declared myself cold-hearted at times because it's really tough to get me to cry about something. I get sad, yes, but to physically cry rarely happens. (Even if lately I've been able to do that a lot more often.) Because of this, I can gauge how well a movie/drama gets me emotionally invested. I just watched A Girl That Leapt Through Time, the live action movie with Naka Riisa and I BAWLED LIKE A BABY. IT IS FUCKING AMAZING.
First thing's first though, the summaries all around are very lacking in detail and I thought this was totally going to be just like the anime/manga. It wasn't. Instead of focusing on the girl in those series, this takes place in the future when she's a mother and Naka Riisa plays her daughter, Akari. Her mom, Kazuko, gets into this accident and Akari vows to get this message that Kazuko wanted to get to this guy that is in a picture with her, a Fukamachi. Kazuko had made the elixir (two vials worth) that would help her travel through time and they worked. Akari manages to go back in time, except two years after when she should've, landing in year 1974. And that's where the story takes off.
She ends up literally landing on a Mizorogi Ryota who helps her in her quest. He is, hands down, one of the cutest things ever. Doesn't hurt that he's played by Nakao Akiyoshi with his small eyes of adorableness. They grow closer, of course, and well, there are feelings to be confronted. Akari also ends up meeting her dad who she hadn't known all her life in this HYSTERICAL scene where he's bathing in the hallway sink. I DIED. XD
Anyway, all the scenes with Ryota/Akari made my squee button go off. That is until the ending. Shit, the ending. So they foreshadowed it by showing this newsreport at the beginning of this bus crash that had happened March 3rd, 1974 and how everyone on this bus lost their lives and blahblah. It was a bus heading towards Noshiro. Turns out that Ryota was heading home (his dad had collapsed and their was a bit of drama there) and that was the exact bus he was on. Of course, it was, right? When Akari realized that Ryota was probably going to die, she raced to stop him.
But Fukamachi (or Ken, I think his real name was?) stops her, tells her that a person from the future can't change the past. And Akari tells him that she won't return to the future then, and even goes so far as to SMASH the other vial of elixir that would've gotten her back to her time. So she shakes Fukamachi off and dashes for the leaving bus, but again Fukamachi catches her. This time, he tells her that they cannot change the future. And Akari's just crying and FUKAMACHI GOES AHEAD AND WIPES HER MEMORY. Guys, I can't even explain it properly. It is so emotional this scene that I was still crying moments after it.
Predictably though, the ending won't be entirely happy since he's from 1974, she's from 2010. He died and whatnot, but there was this nice scene at the end where she's watching the movie he directed (and had given to her), and Akari cries while watching it. Not sobs or anything, just a few tears that she didn't really understand why she had, but just seeing that made my heart go T.T.
Long story short, it is an amazing movie. go see it. GO SEE IT NOWWWWWWWWWWWW.
