It's (already) 2017. Luis Fonsi is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is Star Wars: The Last Jedi. New terms coined include: Latine and Zoomer.
For 2017, I read five fics: one Sentinel, one Starsky and Hutch, one Man from U.N.C.L.E., and two Sherlock Holmes. Apologies to the Professionals fans among my readers. Uniquely, I think, there are no Pros fics in this batch.
The Sentinel fic I read was
Guide Issues by
franscats. This is an Are-Known AU, but not of the common type where guides are essentially property. Indeed, it is the rights of sentinels that are questioned in the course of the story, though this is not a simple inversion of the oppressed-guides trope, either. I liked this fic quite a bit. It had an interesting and multifaceted mystery entwined with some political intrigue. The characterizations were solid, as well. The ending, after most of the plot threads had been resolved, did go on a bit too long for me. My general lack of interest in sex scenes had a lot to do with that, though. 42,196 words. Jim/Blair slash.
I also read the Starsky and Hutch fic
Hutch Versus the Rat King by
garrideb. This fic takes place in the wake of the episode Vendetta. I think I probably missed some of its fine points due to not having seen that episode. (As I told someone recently, I'm not a proper S&H fan.) I read about the episode as background, though, which was adequate. This fic starts with Hutch suffering from a fever due to an infected wound. Later he recovers enough to have a discussion with Starsky that encompasses the recent case, among other things. This was a very good fic that connected disparate ideas in an interesting way, and showed the bond between Starsky and Hutch touchingly. I especially liked the ending. 5,315 words. Starsky/Hutch slash. Particularly recommended.
One of These Times by
Tallihensia is a wonderful Man from U.N.C.L.E. gen fic. As the fic begins, Illya appears to have been killed on a mission. Like Rat King, this story is notable for the way it showcases the bond between its show's heroes. It also has a very nice mix of serious and goofy moments, as befits this particular show. This was my favorite fic for the year. 7,017 words. Gen. Particularly recommended.
The first Sherlock Holmes fic I read was
The Adventure of the Devil's Snare by
methylviolet10b. Sadly, this was not a crossover between Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter. (That was obvious before I read it.) What it was is a skillful retelling of the canon story "The Five Orange Pips." Evidently that was one of Doyle's favorite Holmes stories, but I have always considered it one of the weakest. This account of what really happened was a definite improvement. It was also impeccably written. Its Watsonian voice was so perfect that I forgot several times while reading it that I wasn't in the midst of a canon story. 7,623 words. Gen. Particularly recommended.
Finally, I read the published Sherlock Holmes pastiche
Sherlock Holmes: The Labyrinth of Death by James Lovegrove. In this book, Holmes and Watson go in search of two missing young women. I liked the story a lot until about half way through. Then it ran into serious pacing issues and developed what felt to me like a poorly supported romantic subplot. Honestly, except for slightly more polished writing, I felt like I was reading a not-quite-successful amateur fanfic. 368 pages. Het.
In the midst of all my reading, I also listened to a Doctor Who audiodrama from Big Finish Productions:
The Silurian Candidate. I chose one from 2017 with the idea of counting it toward my fic total. Big Finish audiodramas are definitely fanfic adjacent. Not only are they expanded universe content, but many of Big Finish's personnel were formerly part of the unauthorized fan project
Audio Visuals. Several Audio Visuals scripts were even remade by Big Finish. In the end, though, I decided that Big Finish works are not appropriate for fic bingo, since they are so different in form from the other stories I've read for this game.
I'm glad I listened to The Silurian Candidate, though. I used to adore Big Finish audiodramas. (One featuring the Eighth Doctor and Charley was my first real introduction to Doctor Who.) Over the years, though, mental illness has caused me to curl in on myself a great deal, with the result that I’ve no longer wanted to listen to them. I'm trying to uncurl a bit, and returning to this thing I used to love might be helpful with that.
Me and my previous companion in the replica Fourth Doctor scarves my mother made for us
The Silurian Candidate was middling as far as Big Finish productions go. It featured Ace, who is one of my favorite companions, but some of the suspense in the story felt a little forced. I can't really explain that, but if you listen to the drama you will know what I mean. 1 hour 51 minutes. Gen.
