Lifetime Fic Bingo: 2015

It's 2015 and same-sex marriage has become legal throughout the United States. Adele is on the radio again. Here in the USA, the year's top film is Star Wars: The Force Awakens. New terms coined include: aquafaba, edgelord, ghost kitchen, red flag law, and sponcon.

For this year, I read seven works: three crossovers between The Professionals and the film Lust, Caution; one plain Professionals fic; one Man from U.N.C.L.E. movie fic; and two Sherlock Holmes fics.

The Professionals x Lust, Caution crossovers were the three installments of the series The god of beginnings and endings by golden_bastet. The particularly attentive may remember that one of the rules of my game is that fics in the same series that were published in the same zine issue may count as a single fic. The three fics that compose this series were all published as part of the Professionals Big Bang in 2015, which I think is equivalent. Thus, I am counting them as a single fic for bingo purposes.

Lust, Caution is a movie set in Hong Kong and Shanghai during the Japanese occupation of China. Paralleling this, the fics take place during the French invasion and occupation of an alternate Britain where the Norman Conquest did not occur until the 20th century. I did not read as much about Lust, Caution as I often do about unfamiliar media that underlie crossovers I want to read. I think this was a good choice, since the plots of the fics are based on that of the movie.

I liked these fics very much. They were suspenseful; I admit checking the ending at one point to ease a little of the suspense. They have an unusual and very effective structure, conveying the passage of long periods of time through a series of vignettes. They also deliver character development over those periods of time, which lends more realism to the story. Incidentally, I enjoyed reading the plot summary of Lust, Caution after finishing these stories, to see how they departed from their template. 40,757 total words. Bodie/Doyle slash. Particularly recommended.

I also read the Professionals fic Ice-Cold in Alexandra Palace by unbelievable2, in which Bodie and Doyle must solve a series of murders in the middle of a heatwave. This fic was awesomesauce. The plot was inventive, with good pacing. There was both humor and suspense. The Lads' interactions and character voices were excellent, as well. And the story made use of some real historical context, which I enjoyed. It was my favorite fic for the year. 27,135 words. Gen. Particularly recommended.

The next fic I read, Love in the Time of Cold War by merle_p, was based on the 2015 Man from U.N.C.L.E. movie. The movie differed from the show in many ways, but I rather liked it on its own merits, and I have dabbled in the fanfic over the years. This fic was enjoyable. It had the dramatic premise that Napoleon had betrayed UNCLE, and followed it through well. The dialog and characterizations were also good. 6,773 words. Napoleon/Illya slash.

The first Sherlock Holmes fic I read was The Adventure of the Bridegroom's Photograph by spacemutineer. This fic, too, was good. It had a believable Watsonian style, and depicted Holmes solving a notable historical mystery along with the case initially set before him. I don't know if his solution is among the existing theories or if the author invented it, but in either case, spacemutineer related it to the present-day case in a clever way. 6,546 words. Gen.

The next Sherlock Holmes story was a commercially published pastiche, Dust and Shadow by Lyndsay Faye. (I count all Holmes pastiches as fan fiction.) In this book, Holmes takes on Jack the Ripper in 1888. I enjoyed it very much. Its characterizations of Holmes and Watson were excellent. (This is in contrast to a pastiche from the same year that I started and discarded just before. The author of that book had apparently been watching too much BBC Sherlock.) There were also many clever deductions on Holmes' part included in the story, which was refreshing. Much Holmes fanfic is short on these. I completely understand why-they must be difficult to think up-but I miss them. I also enjoyed the supporting characters, particularly the most prominent female character and her dynamic with Holmes. Prior to reading this book, I didn't know much about the Ripper murders. From the little I knew, and what I read during breaks from reading this story, the author seems to have incorporated the known facts very faithfully even while putting her own interpretation on them. As a side note, the audiobook for this book is very good. I managed to get it from my library's app. 336 pages. Gen. Particularly recommended.
