It's 2011. Adele is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2, the final film of that franchise. New terms coined include: ASMR, blockchain, gender-affirming surgery, nanoplastic, and wokeness. (More recent years have shorter lists of coinages because most of the terms invented recently have not yet made it into the dictionary.)
For the year 2011, I read five fics: three Professionals, one Man from U.N.C.L.E., and one Sherlock Holmes. I also read significant portions of two other, long fics that I ultimately decided not to finish.
I want to warn everyone at the outset to take these write-ups with a grain of salt. I didn't really like anything I read for this year, and my mental health has been poor. There is a distinct possibility I was just not in a good mood for reading. With that out of the way, on with the show...
The first Professionals fic I read was
The True Confessions of Raymond Doyle by Sarah K. In this AU fic, Doyle is a passenger on a sailing ship traveling between England and the United States, while Bodie is one of the crew. The fic is based on the young adult novel The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, from which it draws most of its major plot points.
The plot of this fic was very engaging. It kept me reading to the end, despite other frustrations with the story. The writing was good, as well, and the author had clearly done research into the operation of sailing ships, which gave the story a feeling of authenticity.
I had difficulty with the characterizations, though, especially of Doyle. In historical AUs told from Doyle's point of view, he sometimes seems to function as an audience proxy character without much individuality. (This is especially true in AUs in which he is cast as an inexperienced young man just setting out into the world, as he is here.) This seemed to me to be such an instance. I just didn't get much sense of him as Doyle. Bodie felt more himself, but was still a little bland. 30,223 words. Bodie/Doyle slash.
The second Professionals fic I read was also an AU:
Łe Nòte del Carnevàl by golden_bastet. In this fic, Bodie and Doyle live in 18th centruy Venice. I liked it better overall than The True Confessions of Raymond Doyle. Both characters felt more themselves. The setting was intriguing, as well. I think the story fell afoul of whatever it is that makes me not into historical AUs, though, because in the end I just felt neutral toward it. 25,557 words. Bodie/Doyle slash.
Next I read
For Kicks by Dawnwind, the first in her series of crossovers between The Professionals and the TV series Racing Game. I watched several episodes of the latter show in preparation for reading the fic. I don't think that is necessary to enjoy the story, but it was fun to have a bit of familiarity with the crossover characters.
This is a plotty case fic, and I would call it good overall. I especially liked its vivid side characters. I did find it kind of slow in the middle, and it was difficult for me to push through until it picked up again. See what I said above about my mood, though. Others might not have that experience. 70,222 words. Bodie/Doyle and Sid Halley/Chico Barnes slash.
I also read
Calculus by
elmey, a Man from U.N.C.L.E. story about the beginning of Napoleon and Illya's partnership. It's well constructed, with good writing and good characterizations of both our heroes and the other canon characters who appear. I'd say it was my favorite for the year. 8,302 words. Illya/Napoleon slash.
Finally, I read the Sherlock Holmes fic
Auld Reekie by Garonne. This is an established relationship story that sees Holmes and Watson travel to Scotland at the request of an old friend of Watson's. Watson's character voice is quite good here, especially compared to one of the fics I abandoned. I would have liked to see more of the case, but the relationship developments that were the main focus were interesting and illuminated the characters well. Somehow the story didn't quite float my boat, though. 12,885 words. Holmes/Watson slash.
