Lifetime Fic Bingo: 2007 & 2008

May 25, 2024 21:50

Today I have two years' worth of write-ups to share. I've been reading quite a bit lately, but between one thing and another, I haven't been able to post. Fortunately, I recently had the bright idea to write notes about each fic as I finish it, rather than trying to write them all up from memory later. (Don't ask me why I didn't think of this until now, because I don't know.)

It's 2007. Rihanna is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is Spider-Man 3. New terms coined include: Bechdel test, colony collapse disorder, coworking, crowdfunding, hashtag, Latinx, listicle, mic drop, tweetstorm, and yeet.

For 2007, I read five fics: three Professionals, one Sherlock Holmes, and one Man from U.N.C.L.E..

The first Professionals fic was The Strongest Will by PFL. It traces the development of Bodie and Doyle's relationship through a series of both canon and original events. Its main focus, however, is on their two personalities and how they conflict with, compliment, and influence one another. The result is a rich fic with many character insights. It isn't what one would call plotty, but there are some important plot points that serve to further illuminate the characters. It was my favorite fic for the year, and I actually read it twice.

As an aside, I thought the sex in this fic was very well done, too: always relevant to the story and including a well calibrated amount of detail. (The fic is definitely explicit, but perhaps in a more impressionistic way than some fics.) 25,578 words. Bodie/Doyle slash. Particularly recommended.

I also read PFL's Professionals fic On Maneuvers, in which Murphy discovers some compromising items in Doyle's flat during routine surveillance and difficulties ensue. This fic was also excellent, maintaining tension throughout and delivering good characterizations. 4,872 words. Bodie/Doyle slash. Particularly recommended.
Comments with spoilers:
[Spoiler (click to open)]I liked the ending of this fic, especially. I do appreciate some realism about the difficulties the Lads would have faced as same-sex lovers in their time and place and career. On the other hand, them being caught and dismissed isn't pleasant to read about, especially as a queer person. It made the ending more hopeful that in this story they were allowed some agency (or at least Bodie was).

The third Professionals fic was All Places Alike by Asymphototropic. There wasn't a lot to this fic, but it was pleasant as far as it went. There was some nice interaction between the Lads, a little health education, and Bodie attempting to do magic. 2,176 words. Bodie/Doyle slash.

The Kidnapped Instrument by spoke is a Sherlock Holmes fic in which Holmes must track down the kidnapped instrument of the title. This fic didn't do it for me, unfortunately. The imitation of Doyle's style was very good, but the content was lacking. The case was short on detail and was solved out of frame, so that it added little interest to the story. The OCs felt underdeveloped, as well. Most made no clear impression (possibly because the author was trying to make them more complex than the length of the story allowed). With neither mystery nor vivid characters to enliven it, the fic was unsatisfying. 7,505 words. Holmes/Watson slash.

Finally, I read Unfit for Vision by Elise Madrid (gilda_elise). In this fic, Napoleon and Illya are experiencing tension in their partnership only for Thrush to throw a further spanner in the works. I had fun reading this fic. The writing was polished overall, and I thought the character voices and dialog were particularly good. The plot held few surprises, but was well executed. It was a solid story. 18,314 words. Napoleon/Illya slash.
Comments with spoilers:
[Spoiler (click to open)]I thought the characters' real discomfort at the end of this story with having to keep their relationship secret was a nice touch.

Now it's 2008. Coldplay is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is The Dark Knight. New terms coined include: adorbs, Bitcoin, fatberg, ghost pepper, infinity scarf, mansplain, Me Too, photobomb, and unfollow.

I read five fics for 2008: two Professionals, two Sherlock Holmes, and one based on the movie But I'm a Cheerleader.

The first Professionals fic was Legacy by Mab (mab_browne). I'm not sure whether to call this fic an AU or not. It has some supernatural elements, but is otherwise set in the world of canon, and the existence of the supernatural is not general knowledge. Anyway, this is a scary story involving an entity from Bodie's past. I enjoyed it. It was successfully creepy in a somewhat different way than I've encountered before, and the Lads were written well, including Young Bodie. 10,795 words. Bodie/Doyle slash. Particularly recommended.

I also read the Professionals fic Doyle's War by Pandora Bachs, in which Doyle contracts a deadly disease as a result of a bioterror attack. I really wanted to like this fic. The bones of its plot were excellent. Too much was told instead of shown, though, and there was too little realism in some aspects. (E.g. Doyle, in isolation, seemed to know too much of what was happening.) I was disappointed. 5,221 words. Bodie/Doyle slash.

The Adventure of the Expert Cracksman by marycrawford is a Sherlock Holmes case fic in which Holmes must solve a burglary and murder. The solution does not rely primarily on his deductions, so the fic is not quite in the vein of the canon stories. It's still very enjoyable, however, with good dialog and a creditable Watsonian style. I like its characterization of Holmes particularly, as well as the bit of backstory it provides for him. This was my favorite fic for the year. 7,027 words. Gen. Particularly recommended.

In the Sherlock Holmes fic Its Own Kind of Chase by ShadowValkyrie, Watson learns something about Holmes that unsettles him. This fic, while told in the first person from Watson's point of view, doesn't closely match Doyle's style in canon. I thought the writing was unusually graceful, however. The behavior of both characters was believable, as well, and the overall conceit of the fic was original. This was a good fic. 3,014 words. Gen. Particularly recommended.

The fic based on But I'm a Cheerleader was Becoming a Lesbian: Megan Bloomfield's Guide for Cheerleaders by Deifire. But I'm a Cheerleader holds a special place in my heart as the first lesbian movie I ever saw. This is a short and lighthearted little story set after the end of the movie and was a fun way to revisit the characters. It also has a very good podfic by HowOldAreWe. 2,218 words. Canonical Megan/Graham.
