Lifetime Fic Bingo: 2005

It's 2005. James Blunt is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. New terms coined include: butt-dial, glamping, locavore, microblogging, paleo, rage quit, ransomware, sexting, and truther.

I read five fics from 2005: two Professionals fics, two Man from U.N.C.L.E. fics, and one Sentinel fic. I also read a third Professionals fic that turned out not to be from 2005 after all. (Oops.)

The first Professionals fic was Stockholm Syndrome by Gil Hale, in which the Lads must resolve a conflict in their friendship in the midst of a troublesome case. I liked this for the most part. It had good interactions between the Lads, including a bit of nicely done hurt/comfort. (Incidentally, I think Gil Hale likes sick Doyle.) The ending was quite strange, though, and a bit of an anticlimax. 15,649 words. Gen.

The second Professionals fic was The Assassin's Daughter by Lacey McBain, in which Bodie and Doyle must transport a teenager whose assassin father has agreed to give evidence. I loved this. The OC was well realized, the Lads' relationship was very engaging, and there was excellent action writing. This was my favorite fic for the year. 16,769 words. Bodie/Doyle slash. Particularly recommended.

I also read The Lily of the Valley Affair by LeetheT (lee_the_t), a Man from U.N.C.L.E. fic in which Illya is kidnapped, and Napoleon must find him. This is a plotty story with many different threads that all weave together into a satisfying whole. The author does a good job of maintaining the feel of canon while imbuing the story with a little more realism. It is an excellent fic and provided stiff competition to The Assassin's Daughter for favorite of the year. 38,100 words. Gen. Particularly recommended.
Comments with spoilers:
[Spoiler (click to open)]I would have liked some explanation of the visions that help Napoleon locate Illya, though.

The other Man from U.N.C.L.E. fic I read was The Locust Affair by Lady Ra (ladyra). I generally like Lady Ra, but I found this fic just okay. It's a getting-together story set during a mission to foil another ridiculous Thrush plot. The mission fic aspect is fine, though perhaps slightly underdeveloped. I think my main issue was that I was very irritated by the dynamic between Napoleon and Mike Donfield, William Shatner's character from The Strigas Affair, who makes a reappearance in this story. Anyway, I finished it, but was unsatisfied. 45,374 words. Napoleon/Illya slash.

The final fic I read was His Left Hand by Martha, a Sentinel fic in which Blair runs into trouble on a research expedition in Mexico. There is no way to describe this except as very weird. Well written, but weird. It takes the mystical side of Sentinel canon and really runs with it. I liked it pretty well, though I am unlikely to read it again. 2,291 words. Jim/Blair slash.

During my reading for this year, through a misunderstanding about dates, I also read A Chance of Fate by Claire Dobbin which was finished in 2007. This is a historical Professionals AU set in early 20th century Russia. I read it as part of my effort to like historical AUs. They have never been my thing, but so many other people seem to like them that I keep trying to discover what I'm missing.

When I started this fic, I had just read half of the historical Pros AU Hazardous Fortune, which is from 2005. It failed to engage me, and I ended up abandoning it. Historical AUs were still at the front of my mind, though, and when I spotted this one while hunting around for my next read, I was attracted. It appeared fairly short-only the first part is posted on AO3, with a link to the continuation-and with the setting of Russia in 1905, I hoped the Bodie and Doyle characters might become involved in some of the political unrest of that time. They didn't, though, and the story turned out to be a straight romance (only, you know, in a slashy way). That's fine, but I found it a little boring. The characters didn't feel much like Bodie and Doyle to me, either, which is a problem I often have with AUs in general and historical ones in particular. Not my cup of tea. 20,963 words. Bodie/Doyle slash.
