Just a brief comment on “Total Conversion AUs.” There are a few in MFU, but they’re not common. (Actually, I think it happens more often that one of the guys is placed in UNCLE and the other is introduced as an outsider, but I’ve read a few where there’s no UNCLE at all.)

A total conversion AU that comes to mind is spikesgirl58’s series “Hot Tropical Nights.” In that series, Illya is an island tour guide (I think) and Napoleon is a writer who comes to visit the island and stays.

I really like spikesgirl58’s writing, but I will admit that total conversion AU’s aren’t my cup of tea, no matter how well written. It’s like taking the actors and putting them in a completely different show and pretending it’s somehow MFU. In many ways it would be better just to give the characters new names and label the story “original fiction.” Just in my own opinion, of course….

There are quite a lot in Professionals fandom, for whatever reason. Someone once told me that it is because, in the early days, there were writers who liked the characters but didn't actually like the show. Possibly that is how the tradition got started, but all the total conversion AUs I've read in Pros fandom are by writers who also write non-AU Pros fic ( ... )

The reason I don't like total conversion AUs is basically the same as yours. I'm here for the fanfic, and they simply don't feel like fanfic for my shows. Take that away, and a lot of the time you are just reading a romance novel, which isn't really my thing.

I’m about the same. I often enjoy romance in the books or stories I read, but I don’t generally read books or stories that are strictly in the romance genre. I generally want some adventure or mystery or fantasy along with the romance, especially if it’s a full length novel. A short story that’s strictly romance is fine, but I need something beyond romance to hold my interest for a couple of hundred pages.
