Enterprise 4x06 - The Augments

By now I am way more than a week behind. I didn't mean to say anything about the episode, because, well, there wasn't much about it imho.

But then, that one thing didn't leave me alone...

Two little comments:

- if they say "I had no choice - it was the only way" one more time, I'm going to scream!

- Trip and T'Pol's conversation was... unsatisfactory. It can be read as totally open or the last mention of the relationship. The "we wouldn't have made a good couple anyway" (let's never mention it again) kind of ending. I don't know what I want from those two, but that wasn't it. :)

And one big comment - the "torpedo paradox":

a) torpedo speed: I can accept that the Enterprise's torpedo is faster than the other ship's - if the ship outguns them three to one, it's plausible that their torpedos would have better propulsion systems. I'm not contesting that the torpedo could in fact overtake the other one and hit it. A bit weird (and a pretty low chance of a hit), but possible.

b) explosion: Malik said that the intention was to detonate the torpedo in the atmosphere - from that we must conclude that the pathogens will survive an explosion. That means they will have survived the explosion in space, too.

c) pathogen: Pathogens is such a wide field, it can be anything from viruses to poisonous substances. Neither would be harmed by the void of space in any way. I would assume that Malik has put a pathogen mix into the torpedo (did he say what he put in it?) of which at least a few are not disabled by being in vacuum.

d) proximity to the planet: The two ships (or at the very least the Augments' ship) were in orbit around the planet, that means there was gravity where they were. The torpedos were below them.

===> There is no way that hitting the torpedo would save the planet's population - if we accept precondition b). It's a paradox.

The pathogens would be attracted by the planet's gravity and reach the surface - maybe less of it than if it had detonated in the atmosphere, but what difference does it make? They're the deadliest pathogens in the known universe.

===> Those Klingons are dead. Period.

To my trek-versed friends: would it have screwed with canon if they'd started a war with the Klingons now?

Ah well, I liked the arc anyway. That last part left me shaking my head more often than the other two parts combined... I admit I like the longer arcs better - the Xindi last year were great. I don't think they dare do anything as long as that again, though.
