The Big Payoff
Normally, I'll bet somewhere between a nickel and a quarter, just to spice up a game. When U.C.L.A. played Notre Dame at South Bend, I think I had 7 or 8 points, for $5 with Mary McKenzie, a superb nurse who administers St. Josephs' Chronic Hemodialysis Unit, and is a Notre Dame fan. The Bruins almost won the game outright, and our bet carries the additional obligation to wear the opponent's colors, emblem, sweatshirt, etc. We went double or nothing, and I think I gave Mary 10 points and the Irish vs U.S.C. Here's the payoff:
Mary is a great sport! All of the Trojans were great sports and Pete Carroll was a classy loser. It goes without saying that I wish the Trojans the best of luck when they return to the Rose Bowl to prevent their third straight loss (Texas, U.C.L.A. and Michigan!)

A special thanks to Carl Dorrell whose leadership and quiet strength and determination has been criticized by many alumni, and who had the coadching wisdom to stick with Pat Cowan over a rusty and not as mobile, Ben Olson, to give the Bruins the offensive mobility they needed. Also to Dewayne Walker and Todd Howard and all of the coaches who crafted a defense who rewrote history. A very proud day for U.C.L.A.
