We saw The Golden Compass last night. It was fun, as far as these things go. The theatre was unwarrantedly warm, but that's not the movie's fault.

A few thoughts from the movie:

  • It might just be me, but I got the feeling that they were desperate to make sure that the audience knows that the Alethiometer is a "golden compass"
  • Even though IMDb says it ain't so, one part (a 2-second cut leading into a scene with TEH EVIL LEEDUR) looked exactly like BCE Brookfield Place. Stock videography?
  • The movie did a good job of putting me in mind of other movies: LOTR (Saruman and the voice of Gandalf), Star Wars ("I AM YOUR FATHER!")... uhm... Coke commercials (c'mon... CG polar bears! what did they expect?!)
  • As my friend D pointed out on the way out... if Lyra's folks are Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, why does she have brown eyes? The genetics in her universe are way messed up.
  • Finally... WTF is up with the song in the closing credits?!
  • All in all, they did a decent job of presenting the highlights of the book within a reasonable time. I hope they make the next two...

The commercials before the movie (and we were subjected to, like, half an hour's worth) were... interesting. Milk has a novel 5-second-commercial campaign, which means that they had approximately 6x as many commercials as anyone else. And the really annoying PSP Darth Vader edition commercial (guy gets on crowded elevator, proceeds to piss everyone off) was run twice. I don't know what gives, either.

There was one good commercial, but I now forget what it was for Blockbuster. Good, but not quite memorable enough, apparently.
