All about Hippos

So I googled "Hippo" because I'm at work, have nothing better to do, and as you may know I rather enjoy the sight of a happy hippo, and I saw one of the worst things in my life.   Hippo poachers.

Is this some kind of "sport" or something?  To see if hippos can be killed because they are so dangerous, strong, amazing, etc?  I can't imagine what's going through someone's head when they kill an animal like that.  There were also pictures of people killing gazelle, zebras, buffalo...the list goes on.  Either way, what on earth can they be thinking...   Even hunting deer doesn't make any sense to me.  Ok guys, I'm not a vegan or anything - I do rather enjoy a good piece of steak every once and a while, but we're living in the 21st century... There's no need to hunt for food anymore.. Unless you're a part of Survivor 46 or something.

This kind of thing makes me re-evaluate what I think about hippos being the number one animal killer of humans in Africa.  They're totally justified. The hippos I mean.

I was watching a discovery channel special on hippos and watched as the alpha male in the pod was being challenged by a younger, stronger male.  The older male got hit by  the younger male under his ear.  And by morning, the older male had died.  All of the other members of the pod gathered around his body and nudged it, picked up his feet with thier mouths, and gently shook it as if to say, "wake up..."... They say that only elephants are known to mourn their dead, but evidence shows that hippos do it too.

Even I will mourn the loss of this hippo, though, while I sit at work and cry onto my keyboard.

sorry for the melancholy post, guys...
