"Liz,
It is great to hear from you! I have your picture on my screen saver with all of my other past research students, so I see it frequently and I think of you often and wonder what you are doing. In fact just yesterday I was thinking about you. I am very glad to hear you are going back to college. Good for you! As for your adventures at Geneseo, I think it is time for you to forgive yourself. You are far too critical of your time here, chalk it up to experience, let it go and move on. For what it is worth, I always thought you had a great aptitude for experimental physics and did it quite well. As for course work, that is simply a maturity and self discipline issue which it sounds like you have mastered. Stick with it stay in school, graduate and go to grad school. Believe it or not you are an intellectual. Now that you are more mature and disciplined, you can now finish what you started and move forward. Call me sometime so I can advise you on graduate school. I would really enjoy talking to you. My cell number is xxx-xxx-xxxx. I even know how to text message now. The students taught me this summer. Can you believe it took me this long to use text messaging?...

"Hi Liz,
...I took some time in replying, because I wanted to have some time to sit down and write. I can't tell you how happy your messages make me! I'm so very proud of what you've become, and I'm very touched that you share it with me. This semester one of my other students who left in his senior year (with one semester of work to complete) got time off from his technician job and came to Geneseo as a full time student for the fall semester and finished the work he needed to earn his undergraduate degree. I was talking to Steve and I said that I get more pleasure from hearing about you and this young man living successful lives and finding your way than I do from the "A" students who complete their Ph.D.'s in graduate school. Do me a favor, however - don't tell the A students!...
