Chapter 5
Nathaniel stood at the closed door for awhile aching inside. He longed to go in and comfort Marie. He debated whether he should knock on the door, force her to open it, and make her let him take care of her. But her knew her well enough to know that that wouldn't work. Instead he hurried back to his car and got in. He drove away and parked in his usual spot. He exited the car and hurriedly undressed, leaving his clothes on the front seat. He debated whether or not he should take something to wear with him but decided against it. He was just going to check on her. He wouldn't need his clothes.
He stood by the car for a minute and took a few deep breaths. Then he changed. His form seemed to shimmer and fold in on itself. One moment a man stood there the next minute a coyote paused in the spot of a moment before it loped off towards Marie's house. Nathaniel loved coyote form. All his troubles seemed to melt away. He felt so free and unfettered. He could spend years like this and in the past he had. How easy things would be if Marie was a coyote, he thought, then we could just run off into the wilderness together.
He approached her property from the scrub woodland it brushed up against. There was a concrete culvert that ran though her backyard and he used it to shimmy under the chain link fence. He padded down the hill and crept up to her back window. This one faced the front door and he propped his feet against the wall so he could look inside.
Marie was curled up on the tile floor of her entryway fast asleep. Nathaniel frowned. It's going to be in the low 40s tonight. She'll catch a cold laying there. He sighed as he made his way over to the back door that lead to her garage. Changing form he reached up over the door frame and pulled out the key he kept there. He quickly opened the the door and hurried inside. Damn it's cold, he thought. Moving quietly he slipped into her house and made his was to the front entrance. He peered cautiously around the kitchen doorway but Marie didn't stir.
He carefully approached her and surveyed the situation. Should I pick her up slowly and carefully or just get it over with and hope she doesn't wake up. He decided that fast was the better course of action. He scooped her up and then froze waiting for her reaction but she just murmured in her sleep. He held her tight and enjoyed the moment, then with a resignation he went upstairs.
He managed to get her door open and got her to the bed with no problem but as he was covering her up she stirred. Nathaniel froze. How was he going to explain how he was in her room, naked? He turned to flee the scene but she brought him up short with one whispered word,
“Jack,”
Nathaniel turned. Unsure of what to say.
“Jack,” she continued struggling with her covers, “I can't sleep with my jeans on - help me get them off.
Nathaniel realized that she was still sleeping. He cautiously approached her and began helping her get off her jeans. Then her pulled the covers back over her and turned to go.
“Jack,” she said again. “It's freezing. Come warm me up please.”
Nathaniel was stunned. What should he do? He knew the smart thing would be to just leave but he was so tempted...
Carefully he moved to the other side of the bed and slipped under the covers. He scooted over next to Maire and lay their cautiously, waiting to see what would happen next. She immediately curled up next to him and threw her leg across his thighs.
“You're freezing,” she said and then promptly began to snore.
Nathaniel just laid there. Horror fought with elation as he tried to figure out his next move. Then an new emotion appeared - arousal. Suddenly he was very aware that he was laying in bed, naked, with the object of his most passionate desire. Her naked leg was slowly warming the top of this thighs and all that stood between her most intimate parts and his hip were her thin cotton panties. He felt his body begin to respond to all this unexpected stimulus.
Her face was nestled into the crook of his neck. It would be so easy to lean down and kiss her, he thought. And then I could take my hand and...
Nathaniel cut his renegade thought off before it could get carried away. What he needed to do was get out of here before he did something truly stupid. But it was so hard to let go of something you'd tried to get a hold of for so long. He had to remind himself that he hadn't truly gotten her. It was just stupid luck that he'd landed in this situation. Settle down, Nate, he reminded himself, just be patient a little while longer. Soon you'll be holding her in your arms for real. Soon.
With a deep throated sigh he disentangled himself for all of her sleeping limbs and left. He went downstairs and made sure all her doors were locked. Then he exited the way he came and made sure the door was properly locked behind him and the key was tucked away into his hiding place. He changed back into a coyote and made his lonely way back to his car.
