Just Plane Crazy!!!

In between shooting out job applications this evening, I grew bored. As such, I decided to get down to some menial trivial tasks that I've meant to get around to since I returned from Mexico last month - the most pressing of which being determining how far I have travelled in my life in the air.

Sounds lame, I know, but I find this sort of thing interesting, anyway. When I bought my tickets online to go to Mexico City, I used Expedia, and was happily surprised when I discovered that each flight you find in their search engine gives you details such as flight time and flight distance in kilometres.

So then, I took the time to determine what distance I took on the 38 seperate flights I've taken in the past 25 years, and it turns out that I've travelled a total of 89008 km (give or take). That's a large number - and just over 23% of the distance between earth and the moon. It really helped put things in perspective for me.

The distance to the moon may be tough to achieve - at my pace I'll need to live to 108 to make the entire journey - but I have circumnavigated the globe 2.2 times! Sweet, eh? :)

Here are some facts and figues for you:

My distance travelled in the air: 89,008 km
Circumference of the Earth: 40,075 km
Distance to the Moon: 384,403 km

Where was I when I travelled around the world the first time?
August 1999 - Over the Mexican state of Sonora on a flight from Puerto Vallarta (Mexico) to Vancouver (Canada)

Where was I when I travelled around the world the second time?
March 2005 - Over Oklahoma City on a flight from Seattle (USA) to Atlanta (USA).

Crazy. If I keep up the same pace I've had since 1997 (when we took flights somewhere at least once a year, on average), I'd be on the moon in 30 years...now that's mo' like it. :)

Sorry to everyone for my travel-ramblings. I just found this to be rather interesting.
