I'm starting to understand the mentality behind those European soccer (er...football) riots now. I've always understood that people are passionate about their favourite sports - for me and my countrymen it's mostly hockey, for others it's football, soccer, baseball (huh?), basketball (HOW!?!?!) - I may not understand why a sport strikes a chord with someone, but I can understand the effect it has, and how it's a part of your person.
Anyway, a few days ago my brother (age 15) was playing a soccer game against a team of thugs from a neighbouring region, Guildford.
Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
They've had a history of thuggery - something which is despicable enough in the professional leagues, but it downright disgusting when you're talking about teenagers and younger. Anyways, with about half an hour left in the game, some kid on this other team cold-cocks someone on my bro's team, he retaliates, and before you know it, a full-out brawl is happening. Parents, too. About two thirds of all people present are involved in the scuffle, all because of one dirty punch. The game was called and, moreover, forfeited.
As a guy, part of me found the whole idea to be awesome, of course. The rational side of me (thusly, not the "male" side) thought it was outrageous - as do everyone on my brother's team. Ever since the event, the e-mails have been flying back and forth between the parents, exchanging views, threatening to go to the local papers and TV stations, getting lawyers and the league involved - as well they should - but the BC Soccer League may just put the whole situation to rest by suspending both teams from play for a yet-to-be-determined amount of time.
It's unfair, yes.
How it effects my own selfish selft, however, is also unfair. I've had to sift through about 50 of these e-mails - all forwards (I generally HATE forwards) - and send them back and forth because my parents aren't the most computer literate out there. I don't mind helping, of course, but this is getting excessive. All the parents should have a common message board at which to post their ideas and issues, rather than sending these e-mails back and forth - it's very repetitive and time-consuming, considering there are 20+ people involved.
And thus, there is my reduced net-time. I'm never gonna find a new job at this rate, if this sort of craziness takes up all my time. Yikes!
