Kat's Immigration Hassle

Nov 03, 2006 10:14

So, I left Kat from Summerland yesterday - and 20 minutes later, she got a visitor at her door.

She was, in effect, being kicked out of the country.

And technically, the Canadian government has every right to do so.

Even though Kat is a landed immigrant, and is legally entitled to both live and work here (which she does) - and not only work here, but work in a vital industry that is begging for more workers (health care - she's a nurse/doctor, remember) - the Canadian government has to fill a quota of people they need to kick out of the country every year.

Why is she being picked on? No one knows for sure, but it's likely because of the paperwork snaffu that happened earlier this year - the snaffu in which Kat filed all her federal paperwork properly, and they made a mistake that ended up red flagging her for investigation. Even though that problem has since been fixed, the red flagging of her identity still remains.

All we can do now is file some court injuctions - either on the Canadian or American side of the border - to slow the process, so she and her immigration lawyer and figure out a gameplan.

Apparently, the only foolproof way to stay in the country legally is to be a citizen. There is only one way to do so, too - apply for it. Even if she married someone up here (read: ME), that still wouldn't guarantee she could stay here. So thus begins the long, stupid process of keeping a good, contributing member of society in the country because the government wants to kick people out just because.

I'm glad I'm off work now so I can focus on keeping her here.

We were fortunate that the government official that appeared at her door yesterday was friendly and lenient by giving her 2 weeks to get her stuff in gear, rather than the 24 hours that he was legally entitled to hold to.

It's going to court, obviously, and Kat has a lot of stuff going in her favour, logically - but since when has the government of any municipality, province, or nation based their decisions on logic?

It's so unbelievably stupid.

I love Kat too much - but even in the worst case scenario, I'm not going anywhere, unless it's to follow her.
