The Wailing Wind

In Tony Hillerman's Navajo mystery novel The Wailing Wind the hero (spoiler alert) wins the heart of a dark-haired woman named Bernadette. What's not to like???
Okay, the grimaces on page 8 and 27 are a problem, but that's way below Hillerman's usual quota.
There's also the issue that the book is from the later period when the books are not as long, and therefore not as complex. The paperbacks are just as thick, but if you compare the font and line spacing, you'll see that there's less text per page. And maybe because it was less complex, I figured out the key parts of the mystery in the first 60 pages.
Bernadette Manuelito comes on a dead body, and that starts the case. Jim Chee is brought in to help almost immediately, and Joe Leaphorn gets called in from retirement just about as fast. There are rumors of lost gold mines, and the fact of a lost wife. Chee has to interact with the FBI, of course, which is always fraught with conflict for him. They have not gotten along well in the past, Chee and the Bureau.
Is justice served? Will anybody get a girl????
The book was a pleasant read, as the Hillermans usually are. Sad to realize I only have three more to go.
