And for those non German speaking friends of mine, that means "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away...".
I was bored at work as usual this weekend so I downloaded Episode 1 & 2 in anticipation of Episode 3 (Episode 1 was a german copy?). Upon further rewatching and a few years to get past the intial dislike, I don't think The Phantom Menace is all that bad really. I really was let down back when it came out, just like pretty much everyone else. But all the parts that bothered me can now be overlooked, or looked at differently. Jar Jar played an important role, though he could have been much less flamboyant. Anakin wasn't that bad of an actor, and he did some crucial and cool things. He had to do huge things to demonstrate his uniqueness among the jedi. Plus I think Ewan McGregor looks really young and that helps it feel like time has passed in Episodes 2 and 3. Overall it's easily the worst of the entire run, but it's the beginning of a story, and nobody cares about the beginning anyway. Episode 2 was just kick ass, despite Sam Jackson's inexplicably wooden acting, and his inability to run? Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman weren't all that great either, but fuck it. Ewan McGregor is the shit, nuff said. Too bad Liam Neason had to die in the first one, he was damn good. He should have been Mace Windu, and Sam Jackson should have been Qui Gon. I think it would have worked out better that way. All of Mace's stuff is acting to green screens, and Qui Gon's was mostly people, and dialogue driven. Sam Jackson would have done a better job at that. Anyway, I can't wait for Episode 3, it's gonna be the best one out of the six.
