Rhys groaned. His head hurt and his mouth was dry. He cracked his eyes open and it took him a moment to focus on the bedside table. He stretched out an arm to pick up the glass of water, struggling to sit up enough to take a gulp. Rhys turned his head to look at the other side of the bed, groaning again as the movement caused his temples to throb even more. As he noted that the bed was empty he became aware of the noises signifying movement in the rest of the flat.

“Oh good, you’re awake.” Gwen said as she bustled in from the kitchen, “I’ve got to go to work in a little bit, but I’ve made you some breakfast, do you want it in here or are you getting up?”
“Thanks love, I’d better get up else I’ll stay here all morning.” Rhys stood up slowly, clutching at his head, then shuffled into the bathroom where he used the toilet, washed his hands and face, cleaned his teeth and downed another glass of water and a couple of aspirin.
When he came back into the bedroom, Gwen was busy making the bed and tidying up. “What on earth did I have to drink last night?” he asked.
“I don’t know. You weren’t late home though. You were fast asleep in bed when I got in around eleven.” Gwen lied.
“Hmm. It must have been one of Banana’s famous dirty pints. I’ll kill him. It feels like someone is digging up my brain with a pneumatic drill. I’ve not had a hangover like this for years.”
“I left your breakfast in the oven just keeping warm. I made your favourite full Welsh fry up. I’m sure the grease will help you to feel better” Gwen said with a shudder.
“Thanks love.” Rhys said, kissing her on the cheek before going through to the kitchen, calling over his shoulder as he went “you sure I was in bed when you got home? I could have sworn I vaguely remember sitting on the couch talking to you.”

Luckily for Gwen, Rhys’s back was turned and he didn’t see her freeze when he said that. He couldn’t remember. Could he?

Rhys got his breakfast from the oven and poured himself a coffee. He took his breakfast out to the dining room and sat down at the table to tuck in.
“How is it?” Gwen asked, coming back in from the bedroom, retrieving her own coffee mug and taking a sip from it.
“Mmm, delicious thanks. Just what the doctor ordered.” Rhys grinned, taking another huge bite. “I had an awful dream last night,” he said through his mouthful.
“Oh?”
“Yeah, I don’t remember the details, but I dreamt you told me you were seeing someone else.”

Gwen almost choked on her coffee.

“There isn’t anyone else is there?”
“No, of course not! Only you.”
Rhys looked up, catching his girlfriend’s eye, “Not even that dashing Captain of yours?”
“No.” Gwen answered, relieved that he hadn’t remembered the details, and that she wouldn’t have to lie directly, “there’s nothing between me and Jack. Never has been and never will be.” She said earnestly returning Rhys’s eye contact.

Rhys chose to ignore the fleeting look of wistful longing that passed across Gwen’s features, disappearing as quickly as it had arrived. He believed her that there was nothing between her and Jack. He just wasn’t sure he believed that she hadn’t tried.
