Night was Quistis' least favorite time of the day.

As someone who lived for years according to the stability of routine, even she had trouble dealing with the allotted free time that the dark hours brought. During the day, she made a point to fill up her schedule and keep herself busy so that she would have little time to think of much else other than her work. Nighttime was an entirely different matter-- duties seemed to cease as soon as the sun set, and while the cadets back in Garden thrived for the late night, Quistis absolutely dreaded it. Visits from Xu and events that Selphie forced her into attending sometimes broke the monotony, but more often than not Quistis ended up alone in her room, attempting to fill the time with anything productive that would put off sleep.

Tonight was no different. After scouring through several of the empty dorms and finding only old textbooks she could recite by heart and a selection of trashy romance novels too ridiculous for her to bother with, the only option she had left was to go to sleep. To anyone else, it was a seemingly harmless and welcomed task-- lay in bed, close eyes, wait for sleep to take over. Quistis, however, had always found the transition to slumber to be daunting. The combination of the dark, the silence, and her mind created a dangerous territory that she tried to avoid, thoughts that she didn't want to sort through-- but in the end, it was always a losing battle.

Much to her dismay, the topic of her thoughts seemed to swim around a particular unruly blond. When Quistis arrived back on Gaia and had been informed of Seifer's presence in the world, an odd mixture of emotions flooded her system -- shock, anger, resentment, caution, worry, and somewhere in the corner of her psyche, a touch of relief. It had been several months since the defeat of Ultimecia after all, and there had been no signs as to Seifer's whereabouts. For all she knew, he could have been dead.

It was ironic how her mind touched upon the possibility of Seifer's death every now and then, considering how not too long ago she had been traveling the expanse of the world hunting down the Sorceress. It wasn't as if during the journey she hadn't internally struggled with the notion of having to kill him if it came down to it, but he had never been the target, merely an obstacle in the way of the goal. It was her duty as SeeD to eliminate the Sorceress and take down anyone who got in the way-- and while she appeared to be level headed and composed every time she had faced Seifer in the heat of battle, conflicting emotions clashed in her mind with every crack of her whip; anger that he had betrayed Garden, disappointment that he couldn't deny the Sorceress, regret that she couldn't save him. Reckless and difficult as he was, he had been her student once upon a time, and before that he had even been family. Though she couldn't recall her childhood or the orphanage, even lost memories couldn't cut the ties that bound them all together.

But now he was back, alive and well and looking for a chance at redemption. Quistis was shocked- never had she imagined that Seifer was capable of throwing away his pride, and she wasn't sure what to make of it. Could he really be sincere about wanting to clear his name? And most importantly, could he be trusted? He lead an infiltration into his home Garden after all, and attempted to sacrifice his own ex-girlfriend to Adel-- the same girl he broke out of the Detention Center for so he could head to Timber and help with her Rebellion cause. If he could't stop himself during all those heinous acts, did he really deserve this second chance?

He does, and you know it.

She let out an agitated sigh as she threw an arm over her eyes, hoping that the gesture would block out the rest of her thoughts. She didn't need to deal with this now.

So in a room that wasn't hers, in a Garden that wasn't home, and in a world that wasn't theirs, Quistis clenched her eyes shut and willed herself to sleep.
