Celes' morning had actually been going splendidly so far. It had been a quiet one and she liked that. Relm was safe, she'd seen to Ursula in Narshe, and now she was back, ready to take it easy. She was on her way for an early lunch when she heard the first cries. Pushing through the crowds of people, and wondering (not for the first time) why people always took so long to group and get ready in an emergency (and why in the goddess's names did they always block all the exits when they did it), Celes hurried up to the top to see for herself.

What she saw wasn't what she'd wanted.

Diving back into the castle, she started yelling out as many orders as she could as quickly as she could while she ran for the front gate. She needed to be outside where she could protect the town. The castle would be fine. It had its own defense.

"All able-bodied people assemble outside! We have to protect the town! Moogles!" A part of her hated to just call them by species, but she didn't have time to call them by name. "Submerge the castle! NowShe was ( ... )

Terra was racing down the stairs as Celes' orders rang out to those in the immediate area. Of course, she had not intention other than to fight at her friend's side and defend those who needed it. Anything else would just have to wait.

"Celes!" She tried to get her attention, though in the chaos, it was likely Terra's cry wasn't heard. Nonetheless, the green-haired woman did her best to catch up to her friend. She would reach her before the swarm did, whatever it took.

Celes had just enough time to make sure a proper network post went out on the Sky Phones before Terra appeared and the swarm got within range. "Terra!" she called, thankful that her friend was outside, too. She figured Edgar would be protecting the castle, and for that she was glad. It meant she could focus on the town.

"Ready to help me test out my new abilities?"

Terra gave a curt nod. "Do what you must. I'll cover you." She concentrated and began pelting the nearest targets with large shards of ice. It was tempting to assume her Esper form, but Terra held off. If Lufene really was among the swarm, she had to hold off until then.

Celes noticed Edgar's grand entrance and nodded wordlessly to his call as she sliced into a mistodon. It fell, having already been weakened by Terra's ice. "Thanks, Terra," she told her friend quickly, before raising her voice again.

"Guards, to me! Form ranks around the entrances! We need to secure every advantage we have! Get those who cannot fight to safety! And by the Warring Triad, don't be stupid about your actions! Pick your shots, line up your attacks! I won't have anyone getting killed out here, got it?!"

Those within earshot nodded and scrambled to obey, passing the message on to anyone around. Within minutes, the town itself had begun mobilizing and Celes struck into another mistodon, not waiting to see if any straggling soldiers would be stupid enough to question her.

Edgar's entrance didn't go unnoticed by Terra either, but there was no time or opportunity to acknowledge his presence with more than a glance. She was forced to keep her attention ahead of her and did so, leaping into the air just in time to avoid a blow by a Mistodon.

Quickly, she summoned her bolts of light and sent them in the direction of their foes. Bombarded by her volley, some were felled, but of course it couldn't be that simple. More kept approaching, and Terra glanced around frantically as they did, trying to see if she could spot Lufene or whoever else was the source of the attack. Her attention could be diverted for long, though, and she sent another volley as soon as the others came in range.

Celes took stock of the quickly deteriorating situation before leaping forward, accessing one of her new abilities. Swinging her sword in an arc in front of her, she produced a flash of light that latched onto every enemy within range, dealing massive damage to all of them and felling most of them. The ones that didn't fall to her attack fell to Terra's only moments later. And still more came.

"Choose wisely!" she called, aiming her words over her shoulder for those soldiers still within range. She knew well the kind of stress this would put on them all. "Pick your targets and aim well. If you need healing, fall back and get healed! Your lives are worth more than recklessly throwing yourself into battle!"

Said the one who planned on sticking it out until she met her second death.

Terra suspected as much, but if she had to say anything about it, that fate wouldn't happen. Her plan was to protect Celes and anyone else as long as she could. Hopefully, this wouldn't turn into a race to see who was martyred first.

Celes' attack caught her attention, though there wasn't any time to comment or ask about it. Still, that sword attack had been very useful and Terra only hoped she could repeat such actions as long as they were needed. For her part, she tried to stay in the air, leaping often and striking with either bouts of Holy or warding off blows with her summoned tornadoes.

"Celes! Watch out!" She quickly shouted that after noticing a creature moving into Celes' blind spot, trying to blast it before it reached her friend.

Terra's cry prevented Celes from receiving more than a slash across her shield arm. The general wheeled around and sliced into the mistodon, gutting it before it could land another hit on her. Ignoring the pain in her arm, and not paying attention to any magic she might have, she continued defense for the town.

"Don't worry about me!" she called to Terra, knowing the other girl wouldn't like seeing that she was hurt at all. "It's just a scratch! Save your energy for the swarm!"

Of course Terra frowns a little, but Celes is right. There's just no time to pause and heal her right now, anyway, not if they want a chance at bringing down these creatures any time soon. She gives a quick nod, then spins, summoning three bursts of water underneath the nearest foe and lauching them into the air.

Terra's attack was greeted with raised eyebrows from Celes, but she only had a moment to notice the water before others swarmed around them. Using her Seiken ability Stock Break again, she leveled a good number of the ones still left on the ground before sliding behind Terra to take the hit that had been aimed at the other girl's back.

"There's too many of them!" Celes wasn't someone to give up in defeat, so she'd keep fighting, but even she knew when a situation looked bad. "Fall back!" They still had distance before they'd hit the town's less guarded interior, so she wasn't worried about allowing the monsters to penetrate the town. If they moved back even a few feet, they'd have other soldiers that much closer to help guard their backs.

The situation was indeed becoming grim. Terra could see that, even as she resolved to keep going as long as necessary. Still, that resolved had to be tempered with some practicality, and she did her part to make it happen, launching more magic missiles and provide cover for those who needed it.

Unfortunately, Terra was so zealous in the task that she failed to notice the mistodon that was closing in on her. Its Mist attack caught her at the worst possible moment, and she cried out as that dark cloud of energy swirled around, draining her.

Celes gritted her teeth at Terra's sudden cry, darting in at the mistodon they'd both somehow missed. Putting all of her anger into her next attack, she brought down an extremely powerful move called Shock onto its head. The damage was significant. She could feel the power pulsing through her body as it soared through the air and straight into the enemy, killing it easily.

"Terra!" she cried, switching her sword to her other hand so she could reach out to be sure Terra was okay. Unfortunately, she wasn't given long, taking a blow from another enemy with her shield. "How badly are you hurt?"

Wincing, Terra didn't answer for a moment. She then straightened, appearing a bit pale. "I'll be fine! We have to keep going!" Healing would have to wait; there was no time for it and she wasn't so badly hurt that she couldn't fight. That was the only thing that mattered right now, being fit enough to strike back at their invaders.

There's a quick glance to Celes, naturally deferring to her leadership. She was a former general, after all. If there was a chance of saving the situation, Terra was certain Celes would know what to do. In the mean time, she returned to launching shards of ice at the creatures.

Celes was quickly appraising the situation as best she could while blocking a couple more hits with her shield and arms. She could feel the blood dripping down her arms, but it wasn't important at the moment. What was important was protecting the town ( ... )

"Okay, I will!"

Something powerful...she could do that. Terra nodded and then focused. Fire magic came naturally to her, and thus she decided to rely on it now. When Celes was about to use Stock Break again, Terra was ready. A moment later, her Firaga spell erupted around their foes.
