[This bit is for Marlene and anyone else in the house! Will bring Tifa in as necessary.]

Rinoa sat in the kitchen holding the cup of coffee that Tifa had made for her, feeling even more nervous. Tifa had gone to fetch Marlene. It wasn't like they hadn't met before, but that was before Rinoa had been possessed and gone on a crazed rampage and before Marlene had become a Sorceress.

Everything was different now. She wondered how Marlene was taking it all.

When Tifa said there was someone downstairs waiting for her, she was excited. The, when she had explained the situation a bit more, she got apprehensive. More people knew? She was wary mostly.

But Aerith said to not be afraid, and she really believed her. People weren't bad because of their abilities - people were bad because they were just bad. Thinking on that, Marlene descended the stairs and made her way into the kitchen to meet Rinoa.

Armed with her bright smile, Marlene waved. "You're Rinoa, right?"

Rinoa looked up and waved too. Her smile was weaker than Marlene's, but it was genuine. She was glad that the little girl seemed happy to see her.

"That's me. And you must be Marlene."

Tifa followed Marlene downstairs. She wanted to be here for this first meeting, although if they wanted some privacy she could respect that too. She liked Rinoa, but she couldn't forget what had happened recently. Tifa needed to know that Marlene would be safe with her.

"Rinoa's here to talk to you about your new powers," said Tifa softly. "She's a Sorceress too. She's going to teach you how to control it."

Marlene looked up at Tifa, then nodded. If Tifa trusted Rinoa, then Marlene would too. Most of all, if Tifa had trusted Rinoa with this kind of secret.

"I really wanna learn, Rinoa! I promise I'll try really hard."

The little girl's enthusiasm was infectious. Rinoa grinned back at her.

"Good! I can tell you're gonna be a good student already. So, first things first, we have to set a few ground rules. Okay? These are really important, so you've gotta listen up."

Tifa had brought them all cake as she sat down to listen too. Rinoa thanked her and took a slice, before looking back at Marlene.

"The first and most important rule for any sorceress is that you've got to have a knight. Your knight is there to protect you... From others, and from yourself."

Cake? Score! Marlene climbed up onto a chair to snag her piece. Her fork was already halfway into the cake before she sat down properly. It was only then did she look up at Rinoa, tilting her head.

"A knight? Like the knights in my storybooks?" It made sense so far. "Do I have to pick one right away?"

Rinoa nodded, her mouth full. "Uh huh. It has to be someone you trust completely. Because the second rule is that you have to keep your powers a secret. Only your knight and the people you trust the most should know." She glanced at Tifa, knowing that the Strife family had already decided to keep Marlene's powers hidden.

"Anyway," she went on, "you don't have to pick one right away. You wouldn't wanna be hasty and pick the wrong person too quick. But you should definitely be looking for one."

Marlene nodded her head, fork partway still in her mouth as she licked the frosting off. Keep your powers secret. Tell only the people you trust the most. She trusted Relm and Eiko too, so she was probably sure that they wouldn't tell anyone. Maybe she could ask Tifa if she could tell them too.

Marlene was already thinking about who could become her knight. He had to be the perfect one. "I'll think about it!"

"Good." Now came the more serious part. "Here's the final thing. Every Sorceress is different, so I don't know exactly how your powers are gonna manifest... But for now you shouldn't go trying to test them out by yourself." Rinoa drew in a breath, her face looking pinched. "You guys heard what I did. My powers killed a lot of people. That's... It's not something I'd ever want to do, but I did, and it was destructive and - and just really bad. You don't wanna hurt anybody like that, Marlene, but the difference is that now you can. You can't forget that ( ... )

She did look a little scared. She had heard what Rinoa had done, and she never, ever wanted to do that. She made a promise to herself right then and there that she'd never get like that. She'd never get that angry enough to hurt someone.

"I... I understand."

Tifa leaned over to squeeze Marlene's shoulder gently. "Okay, how about we leave it there for now? There's no rush. Rinoa can stay as long as you want." She looked at Rinoa. "Squall's your knight, isn't he? Marlene's a little young for that..."

"He is," Rinoa replied, "but it doesn't have to be a romantic relationship, I don't think. Any kind of strong bond would work."

She shrugged. When Seifer had become Ultimecia's knight, that hadn't been a romantic relationship. At least, she hoped it hadn't. The mental image made her shudder.

She looked between Marlene and Tifa, finally deciding to go with Marlene. "Well, what else do you wanna know?"
