I'm going to pretend she arrived just the previous night... magitekrune May 1 2010, 14:37:07 UTC
[OOC: and late enough that people can either have known she was there or be surprised. Your choice!]

Celes was a light sleeper. She always had been. It was the mark of her soldier training, after all. A good general couldn't keep track of her army if she wasn't aware of things around her, but neither could she if she was jumping and waking at every little thing. Somehow her body had adjusted over the years to wake her up only for important things. So when she awoke that morning, she knew immediately that something was wrong. Even though she couldn't hear anything, her senses were screaming. Slowly, she slid out of bed and got dressed, taking care not to make a sound and to don as much armor as she could reasonably handle. Once that was done, she picked up her sword and the shield that Terra had given her for her birthday. She had a sneaking suspicion that the present was going to see some serious use today.

She was out in the hallways when she heard the first cries of terror. Rushing up to the top decks of the castle, Celes looked to the horizon, feeling the familiar cold sensation of fear numbed by a sense of duty. She knew what she would have to do here. And it didn't matter how injured she would become. Figaro's safety was important.

It helped to have some sort of goal. Even the prospect of dying in battle was better than sitting around doing nothing.

She moved to make herself useful, spotting someone - she was pretty sure it was Sabin, but she couldn't be sure. For all she could tell in the early light, it might have been Edgar or simply another knight - within a few seconds and rushing over to stick her sword to the dragon he was fighting.

"Fight smart. Don't get yourself killed."

Whatever Terra and her father were accomplishing up in the sky, it didn't seem to be putting any sort of a dent in the dragons numbers. Although it was obvious they were accomplishing something.

A number of the silver dragons were dropping down into the desert, dead, and a few more on the castle itself. Although not all of these were dead, several of them just appeared to be badly injured, their silver feathers covered in magic burns and claw and teeth marks. One of them even landed smack in the middle of the courtyard, one wing shattered, and let out a roar as it dried to keep itself upright.

[ It occurs to me that with Terra up in the sky, she doesn't actually get to interact much. Boo. So here, have some injured dragons to play with!]

Sabin spotted Terra’s Esper form in the air and Maduin nearby her. Sabin was certain that Terra had given up her magic in order to keep living but it seemed to him that they were all being pulled from different points in time. It made little sense to him as he heard a singing blade stabbing into the beast that had a vice grip on his leg. His hands were on the maw of the beast, forcing the jaw of it open as a flare of pain went through Sabin’s body. It took every ounce of energy he had to stay standing as he glanced over to see who had bailed him out of his suicide mission.

Leaning heavily on his other leg, Sabin glanced over to see Celes as his ego took a slight deflation at that point. If he did want to be saved by anyone however, he’d rather it be Celes. They’d had it out a few times when they’d been travelling together which immediately had him wondering if she was from a different point in her life as well. It wasn’t really the time to be thinking about that as Dragons began falling from the sky.

“Don’t fight them alone,” he bellowed for all to hear. “Fight in teams!”

He pulled a potion out of a small pouch about his waist and downed the item in one gulp. It wouldn’t help with the injury he’d sustained but he could feel the drink working nonetheless.

“Thanks Celes.”

The one thing that Edgar very much preferred in this world compared to their own was how high he was able to jump. He wasn't entirely sure he enjoyed being restricted to just one style of fighting here, but the way dragoons could seem to ride the wind in this world was almost magical.

The moment he was in open air, Edgar peered around for the nearest trouble spot - sure to be the location of his brother. In less than ten seconds, he'd pushed against the ground in one strong leap, bounding from the balcony near his bedroom to the parapet next to the other blonds, twirling his spear around his hand as he landed and faced the monster that had nearly taken his brother. "Sabin, you do realize that if you die, I'm never forgiving you, don't you?"

And before Sabin could respond, Edgar had pushed off again with a yell, slashing his spear at the creature's eye on his way up - and as he fell back down. The second time, he hit, and the king ducked his head as things he'd rather not think about splattered from the ruined eye and the dragon screamed in pain, making him wince.

And when he landed, he was immediately yelling orders to the guards farther down the wall. "Don't go for the kill if it isn't available! Distract them! Wound them! Go for the eyes and the ears, find their vulnerable spots! Take away their strengths and then kill them!"

The only reason they'd had it out recently was simply because Celes was going through a rough time. It had been rough before she arrived and she hadn't quite been able to get over it. Add to that everything that had happened while she'd been here on Gaia and the ex-general was having issues with everything. At least she remembered Sabin and knew he was on her side. That counted for something, right?

"Nuthead," she commented in return. "You could have waited for me!"

She gave a slight upturn of the corners of her lips and a nod to show she'd heard the thanks, before she was forced to backflip away or get hit by the dragon Edgar was careening around on. "I'm trying to keep him alive, but I wonder if he wants me to!" she yelled as Edgar finished giving orders to the other guards.

A moment later, she quickly dispatched the dragon Edgar had blinded moments before and turned her blades upon the next one, aiming for its eyes and throat. "Don't they understand the concept of unwelcome?" she called over her shoulder at her companions.

"Brother, I have no intentions of dying anytime soon," came the terse reply as he downed another potion. The effects of it were more readily felt than the first but Sabin was favouring his now wounded leg.

If anyone offered to heal it, he'd refuse and insist that others be treated before himself. The Kingdom before himself and his wounds could wait, it was just a scratch after all. Even as red blots appeared on the outer layer of his armor, Celes was scolding him.

"Nuthead?" Sabin said with a laugh as he deftly shredded a Dragon eye to ribbons. "Celes, you wound me!"

"I don't care what his personal preference is, General, you keep that man alive against his will if you have to!" Perhaps now wasn't the time to engage in witty banter - but if not now, then when?

Edgar spared a quick look at his brother, then shook his head - Sabin would fight until he dropped. If Edgar didn't know him out. Really, the pair of them were insanely stubborn about this. Good luck at getting either of them to stop being a blockhead and get treated, Celes.

Another dragon dropped in the space left by the dead one, actually standing on the corpse itself. While a pain in the ass and too near the beast's mouth for comfort, it gave Edgar a much better shot, and he took it - pushing off the stone to jam his spear directly into the creature's ear. Inelegant, yet insanely effective as the thing immediately began roaring in pain, making him yank his spear back and jump out of the way almost immediately.
