If you watched the audition shows for this year's American Idol, you might remember Shaun Barrowes. His smooth, jazzy sound probably didn't come off as "commercial" enough for the producers to put him on the show, but he has capitalized on that bit of exposure to expand his fan base. These fans even gave him enough votes in an online contest at http://www.slicethepie.com that he won 1st place and prize money to help him finance his album (and users there can profit from the sales of those albums, too - a neat idea for helping independent artists).
