I was masturbating to some 80s porn again last night. I started out with "A Night at Halsted's" -- the classic 1974 film by the legendary (and hung) Fred Halsted. More and more, I'm convinced that Halsted had a muse (his lover, Joey). And when that muse decided porn was beneath him, Halsted could no longer make good films. And he didn't.
I watched several films throughout the night (I was insatiably horny last night), riding two of my favorite dildos on a towel on the living room floor. I went to bed, and couldn't stop masturbating. So I did it some more.
I find that '80s porn (loosely defined) works best for me because it's got a sincerity and distinct sense of arousal. These guys wanted to be there, fucking their brains out. It wasn't something they were doing because they were "straight" and trying to get their head around their sexuality. They weren't doing it because they saw porn as a huge advertisement for their escort business. They weren't doing it because it got them fame and got them laid.
They did it because they loved sex, and wanted to have as much sex with hot gay men as they could.
People often try to convince me that "porn is just porn." It's worth no more than the tissue they wipe up with afterward.
Take a look at porn from the late 1970s to the very early 1990s. Take a look at that "'80s porn." You'll find that there is really very good cinematography, swift and sure editing, excellent music, and some very decent acting -- acting at least the same quality, if not higher, than the acting you see in gay films like "Latter Days" or "Debs" or "Hellbent" or "Jeffrey."
Yes, there's a certain quality to '80s porn which is missing from more recent efforts in the '90s and '00s. But there is also a craft, a skill, a care taken in making the film (in making the film a film rather than just a visual recording) which is also lacking today.
