"They" could be any racial or ethnic group. They don't even need to be visibly different from the speaker.

There weren't any protest events in town this evening.

It was my friend Galya's birthday, so we went to a cafe-sweatshop with another friend of hers to celebrate quietly. Then we visited a newly restored old mosque that is a now museum (It was open because it was the Night of Museums).

It was quiet in the centre of my home town this evening.  Two different political parties were opening their local election campaigns, with concerts and show programs (one on the central square and one a little further). I was grateful for the distraction they involuntarily provided. I hope that's cut off the momentum of any candidate protesters in ( Read more... )

They had gathered on the Central Square of my home town this evening, in front of the Municipal Hall, and I saw them by chance as I was walking by. I had no way of counting them, and I didn't want to come very close to them. Whatever their event was, it seemed that it hadn't officially started.
