Why Agalloch is gay

Apr 02, 2010 02:08

I spent longer than I should have explaining what could have been said in a sentence (Agalloch is gay.) in a facebook comment and felt compelled to post it here in case any of you are die-hard Agalloch fans who think saying they're just gay is a copout. I HAVE MY REASONS ( Read more... )

I thought the closing lines especially really drove my point home as to how serious and logical of an argument it is.

I bet if I walked over to your house right now I'd find a shit covered used condom on your floor full of John Treefucker's cum.

I wasn't trying to present it as an absolute truth, just giving reasons for why I have the opinion I have. Considering the kind of crowd I have on my friend's list I hardly think anyone will find it too controversial. Unlike you, Chase, I don't present everything that comes out of my mouth as fact since I don't believe in any absolute truths.

And I'd think he'd just cover his schlong in a protective sheath of tree sap.

I'm not relaying any facts. You obviously misunderstood.

Entertainment is a matter of personal taste. Humor, for example, could be argued to be almost entirely subjective, as are music and poetry that are strictly sentimental in their orientation.

If you're evaluating something as art, however, there may be room for argument ("that's just your opinion" doesn't count!) but there is indeed a truth out there. If something makes any claim or implication of being deep, it's not so unreasonable to attempt to measure it against that claim.

I don't know enough about Agalloch to know how serious they think they are. To me, Agalloch is gay because their music is (or was) not fluid and alive. It feels dull, banal, trivial, even underconfident and defeated. It feels dead. It feels like they care about being original, about what people think about their music, about them. Like they want to save the animals and encourage minorities to vote. It says nothing important, nothing worth breaking out and tuning a guitar to say when you could slap a bumper sticker on your car that says the same thing.

I'm not saying I have found the truth. I am saying that one exists. This doesn't have anything to do with personal prejudices. Agalloch would be gay for the same reasons even if they shared my personal prejudices.
