Well, if you watched BSG I'd have you write every major character's thoughts during "Sometimes a Great Notion".

Circumstances being as they are, perhaps a story where Alec is sent back to his past body (he doesn't know why and neither do we, he's just gotten a second chance) and manages to prevent Rachel's death and go on the run from Manticore, which necessitates that he leave Seattle for a while. He encounters Ben. He returns to Seattle (a move Manticore wouldn't expect) and is with Jam Pony before Max gets there.

In canon it looks like something kept them. But I was thinking that if Berrisford and Alec were both going on the run, they were safer doing so in different directions.
