I liked the end of Zatoichi, because it's such a typical moment for his films and completely surreal. My favorite of his films remains Fireworks, which is incredible. I also really liked Kikujiro because I found his dynamic with the child to be really endearing and beautiful. Brother was enjoyable, although overall I prefer his full-on Yakuza films. I respect (although didn't totally enjoy) Sonatine (which I prefer to call Yakuza Vacation) because the story arc is so peculiar; it's just a bizarre movie (my favorite scene is where they're playing the sumo wrestler game on the beach).

I've seen A Scene at the Sea but I can't remember what I thought of it. I haven't seen Dolls yet, in terms of his major releases (this one somehow slipped my by). I just added it to the top of my NetFlix queue.

If you haven't, you should watch Johnny Nuemonic because, despite starring Keuno Reeves, Beat Tekeshi has a wonderful cameo. In addition, it's worth watching just for Henry Rollin's character.

And, of course, while not his best acting, I loved Battle Royal (not directed by him).

Yakuza Vacation hehee.Wow you've seen quite a lot of his films! Have you seen Battle Royale II? I hear it's a stinker, so I'm waiting to hear what other people have to say about it. It's strange you said to watch Johnny Mnemonic, because it was on tv tonight, and I purposely avoided it. hahaha I remember Takeshi being in it, but it really isn't worth it to me to watch the whole movie!

I haven't seen Dolls either, but I've only heard good things. Ah, I've never heard of NetFlix before, that is so cool! Woah, wait, it says I can keep the dvd as long as I want then send it back? No way, I've got to read the details later on :)

Kikujiro made me sob for I don't know how long, and I've never heard about Fireworks.. I'm going to look it up on imdb... Oh, Hana-bi! It says in the cast overview that the 'Man Throwing Rocks' is named Edamame which means soybean in Japanese.. weird. sorry for throwing in random thoughts hehe

Could you tell me more about NetFlix? Is it reliable, etc. I'd love to use it!

Do you watch many foreign films? I'm asking because I've been trying to find this movie 'Little Otik' for about ... 4 years now, and haven't talked to anyone who has seen it.

Johnny Neumonic isn't a great movie by any means, but it's entertaining at least. If they'd cast Johnny as someone other than Keunu Reeves I think it would have been quite good.

I haven't seen BRII; I also heard bad things about it, so hadn't gone out of my way to see it. HK is notorious for horrible sequels (even moreso than Hollywood).

Netflix is awesome because: 1) You don't have late fees (which always get me), 2) They have a bigger selection than most local video stores, 3) The online queue makes it easy to add movies as soon as you receive a recommendation (instead of forgetting about them when you get to the video store) and 4) Their recommendations system is EXCELLENT (I entered in my top 25 favorite films and it recommended a batch of 20 films of which 16 had been already been recommended by other friends and the remaining four I really enjoyed). Also, yes, it's very reliable; I'm on the three movie plan which is basically worth it if you rent more than 4 movies/month on average (or have a problem with late fees).

I've seen Little Otik. It's not a favorite film by any stretch but every so often something comes up and I'll recall a scene from it and start laughing uncontrollably.

Oh, you know what.. NetFlix isn't available for me. Only in the US! There must be an online rental service for Toronto.. :(

That surprises me. I'd have thought they would cover Canadian cities since the postal service is relatively well integrated. Very surprising!

Amazon has launched a competitor to NetFlix. I have brand loyalty to NetFlix, but Amazon may have more coverage outside the US.
