- Essay based on presentation (well, very nearly finished...)
Having spent the past two weeks slaving over presentations for the Heine, Weimar, and Laokoon classes, I finally got that great albatross off my chest on Wednesday. This means FREE TIME! To date, I have...
...been to see Quantum of Solace. It's not quite Casino Royale, and the plot is muddy at times - in particular, there's a couple of scenes where they waste perfectly good opportunities for clear exposition on fancy touch-screen GUIs and whatnot. However, Daniel Craig is still phenomenal, Judi Dench gets a much-deservedly expanded role, and the gritty emotional realism that made CR so satisfying is still there. Bond actually stays dirty and grimy for about half the movie - no spick'n'span Pierce Brosnan, thankyouverymuch. (Not to worry - he still has some very fine tuxedo moments. That man was born to wear a tux, I swear.) Bond displays real signs of trauma after what happened in CR, yet still manages to be the hard-nosed, ruthless operative we all know and love. Also, there's a geological undercurrent to this film that tickled my fancy. All in all, 7.5 out of 10.
...baked more cheese bread, this time extra strong with lots of tabasco. Zing!
...practiced my violin again. Hadn't done that for a week, if you don't count 12 hours of orchestra rehearsal this past weekend.
...wandered around Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte with Hákon and Hildur. Hildur just got a job at this fancy pâtissière in Prenzlauer Berg, which is absolutely fantastic news.
...bought a ticket to see the Berlin Philharmonic perform Brahms Symphonies 3 and 4 tonight. A friend of mine saw the same concert on Wednesday, and almost cried, they were so good. Can't wait!
I have also made the acquaintance of several students who are studying Icelandic in the Skandinavistik department at Humboldt. A couple of them are coming over for Icelandic pancakes and hanging-out later today - a perfect opportunity for them to practice their Icelandic and us to practice our German. Should be fun!
