"He tells the funniest stories" he said as he lit his cigarette. She smiled and looked off to her right as if there was something urgent requiring her attention. Parked cars and women walking into the mall with their baby strollers and designer purses smiled and laughed with one another. A soft wind lifted the hair she had so meticulously placed behind her ear an hour earlier. Delicate strands caressed her face like fingers of a mothers healing hand. She closed her eyes for a moment and tried to imagine her owns voice. Telling her whatever it is mothers say to make it everything wrong feel right. Only the conversations and mingled voices from the restaurant patio found her ear. She found these neither soothing nor interesting.
She thought of the day she first met his girlfriend, Fiona. Not actually met, so more as saw from a distance. She was absolutely gorgeous. More over, every feature that added to Fiona's beauty seemed to contrast each of her own traits. Maybe that is why he always told her she was "so cute" or "absolutely adorable". Puppies, kittens, and babies that spit up on themselves are cute. Women shouldn't be cute, she thought.
"Yeah, I have to head in... " she paused as he exhaled a small cloud of nicotine. " I don't want to be late. I'll tell him you said hi."
"Hey, meet me later for drinks? I'll be at Monahan's til 10" he shot his best smile at her like a bullet.
"I dunno. We'll see." She wouldn't go. He knew that, but he still had try. She only wanted what was already Fionna's. He only wanted her.
