I read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland today. Before you judge, it was a free e-book download. I could've chosen something more adult like Ulysses , but most of the books on the list I already read or own in paperback. Back in the ye old college days, I knew people who read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland for their Children's Lit course, a course that I sadly couldn't take due to my heavy science coursework. And besides, it's a harmless read, and hey reading a book is better than not reading, right?
Being a children's book, it's an easy read. It took me less than an hour to finish. Lewis Caroll is known for having a vivid imagination so no exception here. As I read the book, I kept thinking about the classic Disney animated film Alice in Wonderland I watched as a kid. The film was mostly faithful to the original with the exception of a few things. It's been a long time since I've seen the movie, but I don't believe the film had scenes with the Duchess and her pig baby or the Mock Turtle telling his sad tale. A big disappointment: no broom dog. He was my favorite character in the film. Another problem with the book was that the ending was a bit rushed. One paragraph had Alice being scared by a pack of cards while the next paragraph has her being awaken by her sister. That's it?, I thought, but the ending paragraph made up for it.
Going back to the free e-book download,
which you can find here, it makes me want to read more classic literature (and download more free e-books.) I've been reading mostly non-fiction (in fact, my sister's book on the Supreme Court is next), but I need to go back to reading fiction. I'm all for improving my fiction writing skills. I might take a little trip to the library this weekend.
