She’s carried her family like this before. She’s carried him like this before, riding smooth as his touch over pitted asphalt though he’d never feel the jolts. She feels old, dragged down by the weight of every decade spent on this never ending highway. Long ago she’d held the light of children laughing, the gruff love of their father and the knowledge that they were all in the war together. Now she’s a hearse, again, carrying the most precious of cargo to its rest. At least she’s the right color for it; the darkness of infinity spiraling down into nothing.
