I'm in Ljubljana, Slovenia now. I'm having a fabulous time. Today we visited Ljubljana Castle here in Ljubljana, obviously. It was spectacular. I love it that they built crazy things like that hundreds of years ago. The city is fabulous, too. We've ate some really good food--Slovenian, Mexican, Cafe fare, etc. Everyone here speaks English, which is nice but sad because I can't speak anything else. I guess the Slovenes have to, though, because only 2 million people speak Slovenian. If they didn't speak some other languages, they wouldn't be able to communicate with anyone. This woman we met at the foreign affairs place said they teach children at least three languages as they are growing up! Crazy! We never had foreign language until middle school, and even then no one took it.
Today we also met with the editors of Slovenian Cosmopolitian, Men's Health, Playboy, some auto magazine, Lisa and Nova. They were fascinating because they told us all about how they work with the US titles to create their content. They don't just translate English text. They create all new from ideas that US and other country's titles put together. Their staffs are bare bones, too, and it's simply amazing that they do what they do.
I haven't spent much money, really, which is fantastic. Everything is pretty cheap here. I withdrew 50 dollars when I got here two days ago, and I still have some of it, and I've eaten out nearly every meal, plus bought little junk and paid for Internet use here and there. Although we did find this free Internet place, which is fantabulous. That's why I'm actually updating. I bought this thumb ring for like two dollars. Love it.
Our hotel/hostel thing we're staying in is kind of a dump, but luckily we're not there ever so it's okay. I didn't expect the Ritz, but I also didn't expect trashy showers and gross-o toilet paper for all the money I paid to come over here. Oh well, I'm not dwelling on it, and really it's not that bad. There's too much other cool stuff to talk about besides me trash-ass hotel.
Tonight/this morning at 3 a.m. we leave for Venice, and we may go to Florence, although I highly doubt it because of time restraints. I can't wait to see Venitian glass and the canals and all. I love Europe, simply said. I think I'm going to become Europe-obsessed like Anna when I get back to the States. (Hehe, Anna! You know you are!)
Anyway, I must be going. Off to buy a train ticket to Venice and find something to eat. Till next time...
