I recently read Emily Mayhew's Wounded: A New History of the Western Front in World War I. It is awesome.

This is a book about logistics and practice - from a social history perspective! There's no emphasis on heroic feats of surgery or grand advances in technology. Instead it's a history of making a working community and a working medical ( Read more... )

There is no feeling quite like the feeling when you realize that what you thought was going to be a social history of the Great Depression is actually an anti-regulation screed about how neither Hoover nor FDR trusted the markets enough.
