As I knew The Avengers was going to come out in the movies soon, I thought I should at least see the movies on the different characters first! After seeing Iron Man and Thor (will not count any of the Hulk ones), Captain America was next in line.
Now I have to admit, being European and only "comic aware", I knew of Captain America but did not know his mythology - no comments from my US friends here please, I mean did anyone of you know there is a Captain Britain? HA. So I started this movie very neutrally with no real expectations besides hoping I would enjoy it more than Thor. Thank god, I did. Ok it was not overwhelming with brilliance, but I did find it a good entertaining blockbuster, which is what it was aiming at being anyway.
Plotline: 1940s, Future Captain America is trying by all means to join the US army to go fight the evil enemy in Europe. But he is so small and skinny that no one wants him, until some strange scientist recruits him on a special mission because his heart is so pure - ok, so far the story is not really selling. But when future Captain becomes Captain, then the fun begins. A few entertaining lines, cool special effects and explosions all over just keep you entertained until the end where the scenario was not up to it. It does lose a few brownie points though at the choice of the evil guy, frankly they could have done better.
Anyone who wants to watch something that does not require much thinking, but goes well with popcorn and a good sound system, this would be something for you. And to be honest, even if it is not the film of the year, it is a nice comic comfort and a bit reassuring after the likes of Thor and Green Lantern. But then again, maybe I should be glad I never read the comic books, or I would probably think differently of the movie...
