"I'm so much cooler online, yeah I'm cooler online"

What is it about these Facebook quizzes that's so damn addictive? I sit at work all day, sometimes with almost nothing to do, and therefore I'm on Facebook a lot. Now, I realize that I may have just answered my own question there- boredom is a powerful tool. But the plethora of personality quizzes that have popped up all over the place make me think that there's something to them. Something about our collective egos that makes us really want to... show off? I don't really know how to phrase it. I include myself in this group, of course. I don't pretend that I'm not one of the thousands of people who are broadcasting their top 5 whatever to all and sundry. I guess it's just another way to communicate- little tiny conversation starters that cascade down my home page, one after the other. "Jason was a Knight in his past life." "Alex is a Digimon!" "You're a FUCKING GOLEM." "David picked a new Top Five Favorite Beers!" On and on.

I don't really know where I'm going with this, don't have an argument to make or anything. I just find the whole phenomenon to be really interesting. And, of course, it's a stellar way to take up time at work. Maybe there's nothing to it, and it's just a symptom of Facebook becoming more like a big metaphorical senior room, where people can hang out and have silly discussions between classes. Or during classes, if you're skipping. Whatever it is, I both like it and dislike it. I like it because, for the most part, I think these things are either amusing or interesting. I dislike it because there are also a large number of quizzes/Top 5's that display just how stupid everyone but me is. EVERYONE BUT ME.

I do but jest. But still, the amount of stupid in evidence in these things makes me sad. What makes me sadder is the fact that I continue to take them. But come on, I've got nothing else to do.
