I've started to draft a corset pattern for myself. Have been toying with the idea of trying to make a rather simple, victorian underbust model that will be flexible and comfortable enought that I'll actually wear it - the only corset I occasionally wear nowadays is the short 1790's thing, that doesn't do much in the way of constriction - for a while now, and I want something new and pretty to wear for Tinitus in a couple of weeks. I've become too lazy, I rate comfort and mobility too high, and I've built too much abdomen muscle to wear any of my other ones; guess I should try to sell them off, really, I can't see myself lacing down to 55-60 centimeters ever again.
The one I'm making now will have a lazy 70 cm waist, it'll be comparatively flimsy (cotton flannel, probably just one layer, possibly one layer of ordinary cotton sheeting, and leather, instead of my usual two layers of canvas plus fashion material) and I'll use spiral steel throughout the whole garment, except for center front and back. I dissected one of the old girdles I have lying around - they're all full of spiral steel. The busk is of the extra-sturdy kind, though, but that's mainly for comfort, too. I hate it when the busk bends into my tummy.
I've decided that I want it to be at least partly leather, but all leather felt a little boring, and I'm not sure it'd work with my tattered stuff; so we came up with the idea of doing leather with lace overlay in the center front and back, and the rest of it in plain leather. It's the best solution so far. Will have a look around for pretty, non-stretchy lace fabric tomorrow, if I have time.
Any other trims (I have, of course, been toying with the idea of tattered edgings, pipings, chains and various other decorations) will probably have to be detachable. I want the thing to work with less trashy garments, too.
Yes.
I'm doing the pattern in a slightly different way, to see if it will eliminate the irritating little horizontal gathers that tend to appear in the waist area. We'll see about that. And I want to cover the busk... I need to think about that, too. A facetted faux jet button closure in front would be quite something, eh? That could actually be attached permanently and work with everything I'd want to wear with the corset, too.
