I just finished watching
Koyaanisqatsi for the first time ever. Some thoughts:
- This is the first time I've ever thought "I wish I were watching this in an IMAX theatre". IMAX 3D would be even more awesome.
- There were at least half a dozen times I stared agape at the screen, amazed at the shots they'd found.
- There's so many times I've been out and about with my camera and walked away from a gorgeous scene because part of the beauty was the movement: trees waving in the breeze, clouds scooting across the sky. This film is like a still photographer picked up a movie camera, thought back over all their missed opportunities and said "This time, we're going to do it RIGHT."
- I was astonished at how much my own photography matched shots from the film - the same sort of quest for pleasing geometry in everyday situations. Of course, the film-makers seem to have been much more practised than I am, but seriously: Exhibit A, Exhibit B. And again: Exhibit C, Exhibit D.
This probably isn't a film for everyone - it's basically a ninety-minute music-video, or a slideshow of pretty pictures. If you thought 2001: A Space Odyssey was a boring film, don't even consider watching Koyaanisqatsi. If you have the patience, though, it's awesome.
