Alanna is the main character in the four book series Song of the Lioness by Tamora Pierce. The Alanna who attends school here is seventeen years-old and was picked up from page 142 in the Song of the Lioness. That's the first page of the chapter Fears.
About Tortall. Tortall is located in a distant land. It's laws and customs are similar to the Middle Ages in Europe. Tortall is ruled by King Roald. The King has one son, Jonathan. Jon to his friends, Johnny to people who don't know he's a crown prince. While Alanna herself was born and raised in Trebond, a fief in the mountains to the north, she's spent the past six years in the capital city of Corus. Tortall is surrounded by water on two sides, Tyra, Tusaine, Galla, and Scanra. Later books by TP will focus on heroines from these other countries, but for now, we stick to Tortall.
Alanna's mother died in childbirth. She has a twin brother named Thom studying to be a sorcerer in the City of the Gods. He is close to becoming a Master, and will become the youngest Master, ever, within a year. Alanna's father was a scholar who barely noticed his children. He died a few years ago.
Alanna was raised by Coram and Maude. I can't remember her name and it's not mentioned in the second book which is the only one I have on hand right now. I remembered. Alanna and Thom got Maude to help them trick everyone into letting them switch places.
Sir Myles, Alanna’s history teacher, is somewhat of a father figure in her life. He teaches her, explains things to her, and is the reason she got her sword. He is also pretty confident that ‘Alan’ is in fact a girl.
Her mother figure is Elaine Cooper, the mother of George Cooper. Elaine was in the process of teaching Alanna how to be a ‘proper’ young woman. She wasn’t very successful in teaching her how to walk properly.
Alanna is a noble born lady of rather high birth, as it is hinted in the later books. Noble born ladies go to convent’s to study to be noble wives. Women run fiefs, but don’t have that much control over their lives, at least in Alanna’s eyes.
The last woman warrior put down her sword one hundred years before Alanna was even born. And even then, a woman was never King’s Champion. Alanna will break that in book four.
Alanna disguises her self as a boy and is training to be a knight. At age twelve, George Cooper finds out she’s a girl, as does his mother. At age fourteen, Jon finds out that the best page in the palace is in fact a girl.
Lightning is a sword. Alanna got him through a rather weird event, and it is a rather odd sword.
In the world Alanna lives in, there are many Gods and Goddess. Alanna’s main Goddess is the Mother Goddess who at one point came down to talk to Alanna. Alanna is one of her chosen ones. Every God and Goddess has his/her own worshipers. My brain is flicking out about now.
Duke Gareth of Naxen: Prime Minister or something like that. He’s the Queen’s brother.
Gary of Naxen: His son and a close friend of Alanna’s and Jon’s.
Raoul: Another one of her knight friends. He’s noble born as well.
George Cooper: The King of Thieves in Tortall. Also, a close friend of the above.
Duke Baird: The palace healer and Alanna’s main teacher in medicine.
Alanna, Thom, and Jon are all Gifted. As is Duke Roger and Alanna’s mother. Alanna is the only one of them all who is a bit afraid of her gift. She is a powerful healer and knows a handful of rather arcane spells. Her Gift is purple in color, just like her eyes.
