Crüe time!
My twelve-year-old self would be so jealous. Well, he'd probably first ask why I stopped listening to them for so long, but oh well. Point is, I can cross another band off the list of those I listened to as a kid and never saw live until decades later... >_<;
Having not really followed the band at all in nearly 20 years (the last album I "bought" (had my parents get me- on tape XD) was 87's Girls, Girls, Girls- I never got into Dr. Feelgood, and the little I'd heard of the other vocalist's stuff from whenever that was didn't make me want to listen to any of it) I was a bit worried they'd have a ton of stuff I wouldn't recognize, but most of the set was from their first 4 albums I knew well. Well, technically the most songs (4) came from Dr. Feelgood, but I'd heard them enough to be familiar with them anyway, leaving only a few newer tracks I hadn't heard. While they didn't ride out on motorcycles, they did have the usual (he says only having owned/seen the "Uncensored" video on VHS) leather-clad dancers on stage. And, of course, Tommy had a giant "cage" kit mounted to a giant roller coaster track, dubbed the "Crüecifly". XD Sadly, there was a problem with it and it only made it about 1/3 of the way up before they cut the drum solo short, said "Take it away, Mick!", and turned off all the track lights while it backed its way down to the stage again. Hrmph. Oh well.
Notable MC moments were Tommy saying "Konnichi wa, mother fuckers!", and then Nikki actually asking for a translator to join him on stage to repeat everything he said in Japanese (first time I've ever seen a band do that here)- mostly thanks & stuff, and how they felt the first time they came here nearly 30 years ago.. The encore was done on the center stage, which elevated about 30 feet or so (not quite as high as the coaster track, but pretty high). And the show ended w/ a credits roll while Sinatra's "My Way" played. Although I'd have thought the Sex Pistols version would be more appropriate (esp. considering they threw in Anarchy in the UK already), but maybe I'm just used to J doing it. XD
So, for "favorite metal bands as a kid", that's the Crüe, Testament, and Voivod down, leaving Anthrax, Metallica & Megadeth yet to be seen. Not sure if the former still tours, and the latter 2 have been here before, but generally at things like Summer Sonic, although I did pass up Megadeth at AX a few years back, which maybe I shouldn't have... Maybe they'll come back.
