Symphonic Zelda!!!
ERMAGHERD! SYMPHERNIC ZERDA!!!
OK, seriously, this was awesome. Aside from a few minor disappointments in the arrangements due to choices of instrumentation- most notably in Gerudo Valley & Dragon Roost Island, which have a very Spanish/flamenco-ish guitar (which the orchestra did not)- this show was amazing. All the best Zelda music, mostly from the N64 on (i.e. already mostly fully "scored" orchestral-style music), played by a live orchestra. SWEEEET. It coincided with the re-release of Majora's Mask for 3DS, so most of the focus was on that, which was perfectly fine by me, since MM shares most of its music with Ocarina anyway. :D Only one I hadn't played was the 3DS sequel to Link to the Past, A Link Between Worlds, which apparently has some weird Paper Mario-style flattening and sliding between/under things... dunno if I feel like buying a 3DS just to play it though. Maybe some day when I have lots of free time. LOL.
The screen behind the orchestra showed the game play throughout most of the set. The first Majora Medley included Clock Town, the GOHT battle, the moon crash, an the Game Over music. After the Link Between Worlds, the producer came out & talked for a bit, including the comment that Majora's Mask was an "intense" (酷 い) game (also translatable as cruel, violent, or awful, although I'm sure he didn't mean the latter, lol). Then was the Ocarina Medley, which took us through Ganondorf, the Deku Tree, the credits and main Hyrule Field themes, the Lost Woods (SQUEEE!!! ≧▽≦), Sheik's theme, and the Ganondorf/Ganon battles. Wind Waker's medley included the intro, Outset Island, the pirate ship, Aril, the ocean theme, puppet Ganon, and the end theme.
After a 20m intermission, they did the Great Fairy theme w/ harps, which was awesome, and then an Ocarina Suite that played all of the Ocarina melodies from OoT and Majora on various instruments (flute, piccolo, bassoon, oboe, contrabass, etc.), including the accompanied "endings" for each of them. Then Koji Kondo came out XD XD and talked for a bit. He explained how the Twilight Princess theme is in "Hylian", but it's all vowels, so it was easy for the choir to sing, or something like that. He also noted that on the SNES games, there were only 8 voices, so he put 2 in unison, but slightly out of pitch to create a deeper sound (sorta like a chorus pedal, I suppose), but people came up to him like "Hey, did you know this is out of pitch?", and he's like "Of course I know!!" lolz.
After the encore break, in which I was lamenting the lack of Dragon Roost Island in the WW Medley, they actually did it! Sadly, like the Gerudo Valley theme, it's just not the same without the Spanish guitar sound. Oh well. Second encore was another Majora medley, with the Song of Healing, main field, Deku forest, and sped-up Clock Town.
Overall, very cool. Would've like guitar on the Gerudo/Dragon Roost songs, and it would've been cool to hear the Zora themes, or the Majora's Mask observatory music... but I guess you can't fit all the songs. Hell, OoT and MM are each 1-2 hours, & Wind Wanker is 2.5. Which reminds me, I should probably get the more recent soundtracks at some point. XD
