I used to play a video game where you had to break down walls to storm a castle.
And now that is sort of happening in real life.
My neighbour has a chainlink fence. I have a tall wooden fence. In between the two fences is a no-man's land of about 3 feet where over the past ten years my neighbour has put all his yard sweepings. He seems to come from the 'a nice yard is freshly swept dirt' school of landscaping. Every morning he goes out and sweeps his yard AND THEN HE PUTS THE DIRT, LEAVES, AND OTHER DEBRIS into no man's land.
Last summer my other neighbor showed me the result of ten years of sweeping. The pile is about three feet high and is exerting so much pressure that the fence is beginning to lean at a rather alarming angle. Collapse may not be immanent but it seems inevitable.
Last summer I asked him to stop. He didn't.
So.
Yesterday I used a crowbar to remove three boards of the wooden fence and started excavating the mess. I plan to use the soil for my flower beds. But, there is an awful lot of soil there. For a moment when I saw how much much work would be involved I was really disheartened and nearly gave up. It seemed like a project on the scale of the Egyptian pyramids.
Hard work aside, the project is also a bit scary. I hate confrontations. I hope he won't freak out on me. Oh! And did I mention that the only thing growing in that area is a lot of poison ivy? Yikes.
