It was either the computer in Marseille or LiveJournal (or the combination) was defunct, but I couldn't post this 2 days ago. So here it is.

-------------------------

Well, Monaco, Nice and Cannes were a blast, but as you can read by
this subject line, I'm nursing a cold in Marseille, downing Advil cold
and Sinus which here is called, amusingly, "Anadvil".

Looking back, Monaco was lovely. Mainly French-speaking, although you
can get around in English. Lots of rocky hillsides, and every square
meter is used for something. It reminds me a lot of Bermuda. Lots of
palm trees, but the beaches are stony, not sandy. Very expensive cars
rumble down the streets on a regular basis: Ferrarris, Porches,
Lamborghinis. After 3 days you get so used to it that you don't even
notice a Ferrari zooming by. We did go to the Casino, paid 10 euros
entrance and lost 5 euros on the slots, just to say we'd done it.
Beaulieu, a suburb of Nice, was much nicer than Nice itself, where we
missed qll the museums we wanted to see, and walked around a huge park
on a hilltop instead. We were in Cannes during the famous film
Festival, and saw lots of official cars and people in fancy clothes,
but both Sue and I wouldn't recognize a movie star if they came up and
hit us on the head.

We arrived by train in Marseille yesterday. The climate changed a bit;
not so many palm trees, and they're smaller. Our little hotel had a
bunk bed setup and a closet-sized washroom, but a lovely view of the
sea. Today we did a little shoppping, then took the ferry to the
Chateau D'If, the setting for the novel "The Count of Monte Cristo".
So in theory I know the difference between the Prince of Monte Carlo
and the Count of Monte Cristo.

The keyboard at this internet cafe is quite different, so I'm having
trouble typing this. I'll leave it for now, then, and write more
later.
