I'm doing the four questions one again.
This time
greynonentity was the inquisitor:
1.) What's your favorite kind of art, in any period of time?
I gotta brush up on my Art History... I do like me some Surrealism a lot, but I think if I had to go with a favorite, I'd choose Art Nouveau. (And you can actually blame that in part on the anime series Mononoke.) It reminds me of the little abstract organic doodles I'd make in my notes in high school, and it's so versatile, but I especially like it int he form of paintings and in stained glass. to date my favorite Art Nouveau artist has gotta be Gustav Klimt.
2.) How did you first get into fandom?
After realizing that there was a handful, and then more than a handful, or nerds (or not) who watched anime on Adult Swim at my school aside from me? Fanfiction ^^ I started out finding some stuff, usually some pretty bad stuff in retrospect but also a few things that were and still remain pretty good, and eventually got to where I am today with my circle of fandom associates. Hikari Nanase's "Let's Fly as the Birds Do" and
mhmartini 's "Coming Clean" were two of the earliest good pieces I came across and still love today.
3.) Who is (are) your favorite author(s), and why? (And I say author instead of book, because people become repeat buyers to the same authors for a reason be it style, shared world view with the characters, particular word usage, etc...)
This question probably deserves an entry in itself! But alright, I'll make an attempt here and talk about two, one I was into more in high school, and the other that was a recent but all-encompassing experience.
At one point I had read all of Anne Rice's books sans two of the Sleeping Beauty ones and Belinda, but I'm behind now since the Jesus and Angels ones have entered the scene and need to get caught up. I always liked how descriptive she was, even if sometimes, frequently, she might go over the top. I don't know. Using her as a sort of catalyst, though, I've come to immensely enjoy the work, horror and otherwise, of Poppy Z. Brite, another New Orleans and sometime vampire writer. Much of her stuff's Southern Gothic too, but I feel there's something in her writing style that's more relatable--less stiff frills and upper-class stuff and more, these grungy dudes cruising the country in a trashy car, common man appeal. I read my first book by her int he springtime of this year and I've read about half a dozen more since. I'd recommend her to most people on the F-list.
4.) What's an anime, a series (tv or book), or comic book, you are currently following, and what's it like?
Aw shit, this reminds me, I need to be cruisin' for some new anime series... Well, book-wise, I suppose that there's the Liquor series by the abovementioned Miz Brite. It's made up of books (the first one being Liquor) and short stories about Rickey and G-man, these two dudes who get fired from their jobs cooking at this one place for drinking on the job, who decide to open their own restaurant, also called Liquor, where everything on the menu's booze-based. The books center on (mis)adventures in the sometimes mafia-like atmosphere of the New Orleans restaurant industry, while the short stories tend to be more about the Stubbs (G-man's) family and sometimes take on more paranormal elements, like one about when G-man's older sister gets a poltergeist attached to her during an Italian Catholic celebration.
I don't have a tv series but I do have a movie: I did hear recently that the talented guys who made the 2008 cult film Repo! The Genetic Opera are at work on the sequel and that there shall also be a third, making it into a trilogy. The world of Repo! is set in a not-too-distant future after the world suffered massive organ failures and a tycoon named Rotti Largo emerged on the scene with organ financing, and later, organ repossessions for those who couldn't keep up on their payments. There's a lot of interesting commentary, not usually very blatant but always there in the background, on human attitudes towards medical technology, genetics, and genetic predestination versus personal choices. Cast includes the dude who plays Giles in the Buffy series as Nathan Wallace, a Repo man, Paris Hilton as Amber Sweet, heir to Rotti Largo's GeneCo industry, Sarah Brightman as Blind Mag, GeneCo's operatic spokesperson, and Terrance Zdunich (also one of the film's co-creators) as the delectable and Cheshire Cat-like narrator, the Grave Robber.
I almost forgot:
